Why using .local as your domain name extension is a BAD idea!

Interesting read. Thank you for posting @Viperian . A lot of info I wasn’t aware of. Funny how tech changes sometimes...back in the early AD days how .local was “suggested” for use, at least in the arenas I was around. Good stuff! Absolutely, once upon a time Microsoft recommended it. I remember SBS 2003 strongly advocating for it, so I dug out the installer screen: Alt Text: “We recommend using the extension .local for the full DNS name for your internal domain. Because .local is not registered for use on the Internet, your internal domain and your public Internet domain (such as .com or .net) remain separate. This is more secure and avoids name resolution issues.” The ".local" domain in DNS officially became a no-go in 2013. This was when it was formally specified for use in private networks as part of something called the Zero Configuration Networking (Zeroconf) standards, which also includes a protocol known as Multicast DNS.Before then, some organizations were actually us

Good catch @MicoolPaul, already seen the first attacks using .zip as Top Level Domain (TLD).Overall, the worst ten TLDs for malicious domains, as of August of 2015, were:.zip (100.00%) .review (100.00%) .country (99.97%) .kim (99.74%) .cricket (99.57%) .science (99.35%) .work (98.20%) .party (98.07%) .gq (97.68%) .link (96.98%)Not all new TLDs were bad neigbhorhoods. The .church TLD, for example, had 0.84 percent "shady" sites. The .london TLD had 1.85 percent; the older .tel had 1.6 percent. And the safest of all the new TLD neigborhoods is apparently .jobs, in which a mere 0.36 percent of domain names had any hint of suspicious intent. Of course, these low percentages may be because of a small sample rate—if your employer is running deep packet inspection on your Web traffic, you might be less likely to be visiting a .church or .jobs site from work.

How can I protect against time attacks when using NTP in an infrastructure?

@damien commenge That can work for the hardened repository. Local generate time can be off a few secs to minutes but wouldnt break or expose security there. One question I do have though: does your customer have no compliance needs around time? For example: Compliance: Many regulations and standards, such as the Payment Card Industry Data Security Standard (PCI DSS), require accurate time synchronization for compliance. Organizations that fail to comply with these regulations may face penalties and damage to their reputation.

I use the Brave Browser, instead of the mentioned above browsers due to security and privacy concerns. As a backup I normally use Chrome, but Brave can handle most ;-)

Add Veeam to a Workgroup, Domain or Forest? For security perspective but also recoverability you normally do not want to integrate the environment which protects and backups the production environment with each other. Looking at security having the Veeam components in a separate forest with domain can be best of both worlds. I wrote about that some time ago here Several new features coming in V12 will require the VBR to be part of a domain, which does NOT mean add it to the production domain! My advice normally is from a security perspective but in balance with operational efficiency:For the most secure deployment add the Veeam components to a management domain that resides in a separate Active Directory Forest and protect the administrative accounts with two-factor authentication mechanics. This way the Veeam Availability Infrastructure does not rely on the environment it is meant to protect!
