Which Application Aware Backup method do you use?

For windows really only VSS is the deal. I always tell people to check and see if their application is VSS aware, i.e. it has a VSS writer, otherwise the application should have some dumping method, or freeze/thaw script.Vmware quiescing was using for some linux vms.

Big news An industry first. Ransomware protection for Kubernetes by Kasten/Veeam

I had to watch a recording as work has had a spring time blooming :) I thought it was very good as well. Kubernetes is big and when looking at the whole picture is complex. The secret is to take the components one at a time. I think Michael is doing a great job of this only with video but also the series that has created here on the community forums. I have read some Kubernetes “intros” that scared the hell out of me.. i.e. this looks as much fun as going to the dentist to get a tooth pulled :), but when explained well it becomes addictive.

VMCE 2020

Congratulations on passing the VMCE 2020 exam! Well done! Super proud that the practice exams helped you, how did you find the video walkthroughs of the questions? I thought the videos were fantastic. The way you went through and at times said “rubbish” was a much milder format than some of my reactions to the “obvious lead one astray” questions :). Joking aside the methodology was a help too, slowly reading the questions then pausing is essential and contrary to what I used to do, i.e. impatient blast through them which meant possibly stepping on land mines like the good old “not” word somewhere in the middle of a sentence. This format was excellent because the inner conversation that you did in the videos is exactly what people do so this was much more helpful than the standard written guides. Thanks Again Rasmus!

Congrats @Geoff Burke time for me to catch up to you. This will push me. This was kind of hanging over me. I decided to try and push during lockdown and before the summer good weather (hopefully), so that I can just lie on my paddle board on the lake instead of “stay at home study” :).

Congratulations Goeff! I've also have mixed experiences with Pearson; it's not always as easy as in a test center. 😅 I would also say that the exam is fair but it still requires extensive learning and hands-on experience. yes it was mixed :) to say the least..Yeah the exam had its moments. I always judge by how many answers I change during the review. Mind you compared to a CNCF exam not as nerve wracking, like moments when you copy and paste a yaml file and boom the indentation explodes.. CKA, CKS and CKAD allow you to look at the documentation but they are all command line practical and you simply would never finish in 2 hours unless you know where to look and what it does. That is why when you copy and paste a huge yaml file and it blows up.. you see your time ticking away… :)

Which Application Aware Backup method do you use?

Actually we do not use it for sql server, but for ad and exchange. (Both with Agent) With Exchange and ad its working fine. We were always in discussion with the database administrator. They only trust the backup from the sql manager. So if you force them, to use veeam, you will lose anyway. If its working - fine. If not, in any case, you are lost :-). So the database administrator is responsible for backup and restore there databases. With Veeam, we do backup the hole server including the sql backup files. So on an issue, we are able to restore the hole sql server in once. If the sql database are not working probably, we can restore them from sql backup. So it´s a kind of double protection. After this we do offlaoding to S3IA immutable + Archive due to our retention. Interesting I thought only Oracle DBA’s were so tough with their love of RMAN :) but it seems there are MS SQL folks like this too :).

10 tips in hardening your Veeam backup server

One of my wishes would be that Veeam would eventually move completely to a web based gui (something like the Veeam Appliance for Azure) and in that manner perhaps allow the vbr server to be installed on Windows core or even like the Veeam Appliance for Azure on Linux.

365 Backup Proxy

Check out How to temporarily turn off MS O365 throttling | Veeam Community Resource Hub by @mariuszr if it turns out MS is actually bottlenecking your data, handy for the initial seeds :) I could be wrong but does that just work on the email part. I am not the O365 expert in my shop but it seems that Microsoft have separate throttles for things like sharepoint and online exchange? Unless I am wrong here.

Questions regarding backing up a Vmware 6.5 VCSA

Check out this article by the ever awesome @vNote42 VMware vCenter Appliance: image backup is deprecated since 7.0 | Veeam Community Resource Hub In essence, yep possible, but it’s going away in the future so just be mindful of that. I tried using the VAMI interface but in 6.5 only FTP, FTPS, HTTP, and HTTPS are supported. having issues making the connection to a Data Domain using any protocol I would recommend to update to at least VCSA 6.7 (U3). There you can schedule file-based backups in VAMI. Furthermore you can define how many restore-points should be kept. … next to the advantage of not needing Flash any more. Yes I remember when they first brought in those backups in 6.5 I believe.. I said great… now where is the automatic scheduler? oops there is none :(. That must have been a big feature request to say the least.

VMCE 2020

Great feedback folks, I think the leitmotif here is to approach the exam with caution. I remember passing the VMCA exam not long after NOLA. They let us take it right after the course there and we all failed… it was very very tricky. It scared the heck out of me so I memorized the textbook, created a test exam, 150 flash cards and then passed with a good mark despite having no idea whether I had passed or not until the final pop up. I was told later that some “mean Veeam” engineer :) would make the questions harder each time too many people got it right, don’t know how true that was but… it sure felt like it. Anyways too make a long story short I now take every exam very seriously and throw out any hubris about past accomplishments :). It is too easy to get lax.I do think though that if you put in an honest effort you will be alright. The challenge for us all is working a full time job and then playing the eternal student in the evenings and on weekends.Good Luck everyone!!

Unique Features

I have used commvault a bit. The big difference in my opinion is that Veeam is easier to present to customers. The interface is more streamlined and intuitive. From a service provider perspective this is quite important as it saves you a lot of time explaining things.

Veeam Backup in Readhat Virtualization

yes funny how things change :) we were just talking about this and boom… Now supported. Back to the original question, I have played around with KVM and Qemu. KVM is a type 1 hypervizor whereas Qemu is type 2 so KVM is baremetal like vmware and hyper-v. I had no issues while testing but never got to run it in production. I did run XEN for a while but it looks like XEN is going away.
