Happy World Backup Day!

The umbrella maybe insider protection? Alfred should get a cap and some winter clothes as he’s probably sitting on the top of a ‘Glacier’  True but S3 compatible does not yet support any glacier stuff yet only AWS S3 but you are right the snowflakes kind of give it away :)

Hardened (Immutable) extent in Scale Out Repository

I have been doing some testing on mixed ReFS and XFS immutable repositories  myself over the last few days and whilst it does work, its good to know that just because you can, doesn't mean you should   I think there is an issue also due to the fact that ReFS normally for Veeam is formatted as 64K whereas XFS is 4K.   Do you think? For my understanding, we need 64k for ReFS because of the memory usage with 4k in Windows Server. But this could be outdated. Yeah I remember when REFS3 came out and there was even a huge forum topic about data loss due to 4K. It is probably still there. Then we had a veeam support case and one of the cloud engineers said that the mixing was problematic due to the block size difference among other things.

This is always an interesting discussion with clients. I know that with SOBR’s and per vm chains we do lose deduplication as well.

  I think when you are using one VM in all of your jobs or per VM chains than a deduplicating storage would be a good choice.  Yes the only thing to watch is to make sure that the deduplicated storage has a landing zone so that synthetic operations are fast otherwise your run into rehydration hell :). Something Veeam integrated like Exagrid etc

New Veeam Cloud Product!

This is a innovation I need. Cannot sleep anymore without my bottle full of cloud... When I go to sleep normally my bottle (‘s) are empty :) would not want to wake up the next morning and have Hair of the Cloud that bit me :)

Analyse ReFS space savings with Block cloning

Hi Guys, I was just reading this as well. I have used the utility but as Joe says it takes a long time. My challenge, like many others here I believe who are service providers, is to figure out “per tenant” how much space they are really using. If the Tenant turns on GFS or weekly synthetic fulls then the issue crops up. So reporting will show for example 100TB being used while in reality there is only 20TB.What I have noticed with GFS Monthly fulls is that initially with every new Month the added usage is minimal, but as time goes by and blocks are changing in the live filesystem the storage starts to shoot upwards.

Experience with XFS

I’ve done both XFS an EXT4 with Hardened Linux Repo, both worked fine. If you’re using a physical repo server with JBOD storage I would probably lean toward XFS so you can get the block clone features, especially since you have to use Forward Incremental with periodic fulls with HLR. I was using SAN storage with really good built in native dedup, so in that case I decided to stick with EXT4 since I didn’t really need the block clone benefits. @jdw , thanks for your feedback! Keep in mind, Block Clone also saves time (because it reduces needed IOs dramatically) when merging last increment into last full.  Do you have any good test results showing real world comparison? This test is on my to-do list for the blog, but not had the time yet; would be great to see some other comparison if they exist. My theory is that it will be far more important for low end storage but I’m not sure if it will have as much advantage on the QLC-flas

RMAN plugin

Just found this thread now. We had to leverage this with a customer. I like the fact that scheduling and job control is in the hands of the Oracle DBA. I was disappointed to see that backup copy jobs to cloud connect are not supported.

Improvements to Veeam Cloud Connect’s Public Networking

Not the VCC gateways, but the actual NEA for a full cloud failover. :) For full failover we don’t use the NEA. Customers did not like it only for partial failover. Normally a firewall of some kind or just a pfsense with vpn capability into their segregated vlan. From what I understand Veeam is pushing people in the future in the direction of NSX edge.

I could be mistaken but I think you can put them in normal backup copy jobs not just to cloud connect.Quick check of V11 docs and it looks to be there for sure now. Again I think we did see that before but.. being a cloud connect provider did not help much. SOBR Designs

Morning!   So I architected my company’s Cloud Connect offering and its been SOBR with ReFS all the way. I am also of the stance that fewer extents is better if you can size those extents appropriately, more so because ReFS is going to give you the FastClone improvements and we want our customers to maximize on these as best they can. We actually back our extents with scale-out namespaces too so that we have redundancy on our scalability.   It’d be good to have a chat about this at some point to see how you guys do things vs us but could be complicated as I believe we both have UK presence... As long as we keep state secrets concealed we should be ok . The good thing is that when dealing with just the generic level of knowledge then there is not much to give away. Now if you guys have some great home grown method of rebalancing SOBR’s then we might have to send our Canadian spies over there to woo you with cheap beer etc :)

Thanks Guys,Kubestr fits in so well with Veeam philosophy. One of those extremely useful free extras that over time you come to appreciate more and more. Reminds me of the tools on the Veeam agent recovery tool (password reset utility anyone?). There are so many more like VeeamPN etc.

RMAN plugin

Two more points (this might go on all day...) Dedicate the repository to Oracle RMAN in large environments. Don’t mix in VM workloads. This is both a resource issue and a configuration issue. See the point below. If targeting a SOBR, use the Performance Data Locality policy, so load balancing is based on available compute resources (cores). Note that this means that any Oracle database and redo log backups will likely be spread across extents. This setting works for plug-in backups since there is no Full and Incremental backup from Veeam’s perspective. Thanks this is very good information and explains some issues that I have seen. So I take it separating the rman backups looks to be pretty essential.

Great Post. I myself am now also advocating air gapped/off line as well. I do trust immutability but completely offline or on a tape in a vault is totally out of reach :).

VBR v11 🔥 New Linux Backup Proxy Modes ✅

waiting for gateway server on linux I have wanted this for years. It seems so logical as the NEA was already being leveraged as internet facing component, how much effort to simply put a data mover on it and harden it up. Then again I was hoping the NEA was going to be replaced by VeeamPN but...  I imagine because that is networking after all and understandably Veeam don’t want and become a networking company on top of backups :)

Just one word of caution that I think, if my memories is correct, if you have tape backups with a lot of small files this can really bloat your database.

Big news An industry first. Ransomware protection for Kubernetes by Kasten/Veeam

Wow, interesting features. And now some integration with Veeam in V5? Hard to say. As we see Veeam likes to keep some things separate like O365.. but my guess would be yes, even if I am just basing my judgement on the fact that Tanzu is so deeply intertwined with Vsphere.

Suggestion: Veeam Training Focus on Cloud

I second Chris Childerhose’s comment. It would really help to have a special VMCE for Service Providers. Especially focusing on problem solving tenant issues. I think there would be big reduction in support tickets from VSP’s if that happened. I also believe service providers would be more than willing to pay for this.

Veeam Backup in Readhat Virtualization

Hi Shaokat, Do you mean for the Hypervisor portion KVM? It is not supported but I remember hearing some talk a while back that they were thinking about adding it.
