State of the Homelab, 2024 Edition

Hi all! I’ve been following along with Michael Cade’s renewed journey into home labbing on twitter at the same time that I’m doing a bit of the same. I’m currently working through the following2x AceMagic AM06Pro (https://www.amazon.com/Computers-Windows-Display-Desktop-Bluetooth/dp/B0BQHBWPYX) upgraded to 64 GB ram and 3 TB of internal disks each for ESXi hosts 1x AceMagic T8 Plus (https://www.amazon.com/ACEMAGIC-Computer-3-Screen-Bluetooth-Computers/dp/B0CQJQPZJX) as a Proxmox host (hopefully) 1 QNAP TS332x for basic iSCSI and object storage 1 Synology 923+ that I’m hoping to do some Veeam related goodness on. Cloud based object storage from 11:11 Systems as well as some vCD compute for VCC In addition I have some resources in AWS that I’ll leverage to do testing and learning with. What are you all doing for labs in modern times? If you are actively using a lab what are you testing, what’s exciting you?

How to deal with vmware snapshot? veeam functionnality to replace this

Hello everyone,In our company due to bad practices, some application integrators was using vmware snapshot before doing applications deployments on legacy part (no more needed with openshift). Obviously they often forgot to remove snapshot or maintain snapshot cauz they’re waiting answer from project team.We replaced this hijacked habit and provide to integrator/devops the possibility to launch quickbackup in the first time. It was not enough for stagging part and we had to provide capability to create veeam zip with one year retention (yes i know it’s bad...) .  We did awx roles for this too because they wre missing the vmware snapshot comment…I’m curious to hear if other people have encountered a similar situation :)

Backup notification

Hello all,I see in Veeam 10 that the notification email for backup job change and now include the backup job linked.Exemple :[Failed] Backup Copy Job 00-HyperV\Backup Job 00-HYPERV (2 machines) There is a way  to remove \Backup Job 00-HYPERV ?We have scripts which read mail to make​ globals reports​ and this make confusion. Thanks for helpHave a good day​​​​​

To back up data from M365 one can pre-create an app within AzureAD and connect via a certificate from VBM. Then no additional login to M365 is necessary:Step 5. PKi Cert has expired on Vcenter Server and Veeam can't connect to backup VMs.

Hi, Our PKI cert has expired on our VCS server, and as a result the backups of the VMs are failing as Veeam can’t connect to the VCS.  Its going to take us a few days to get another cert generated and installed on the VCS - but is there any workaround we can do in the meantime to get the Veeam Backup and Replication software to backup our VMs?  I’m assuming not really - as that’s the point of certificates!Any suggestions most welcome.Thanks...

VM Hyper-V frozen when work job

Hi all. I can't solve the problem. There is Veeam 9.5. There is a host on winserver2012r2. Inside the host is a virtual machine on Hyper-V with WinServer2012r2. When Veeam makes a backup, the virtual machine is frozen, that is, it does not turn off, the time counter does not stop. But the user is thrown out of the server, there is no ping. Merge 2 Veeam VBR servers into one.

I have 2 Veeam V11 VBR servers. Which backup different servers. Servers are mostly VMWare, Windows/Linux and some Agent backups. No NFS/CIFS/ network share backups. At one point in time, these were 2 VBR servers in 2 separate data-centers but these data-centers got merged so now they’re located in the same data-center. They each use backup copy jobs to offload backups to Azure. For Azure, they’re using the same account, but upload to a different folder. Both servers have different proxies and different backup repositories. Backup repo’s are a combo of Windows and Linux (immutable). Each server uses a different SQL (server 2019)  back-end. Now, the idea is, to upgrade Veeam to V12 and merge these 2 V11 VBR servers into one V12 VBR server. Is this even possible? An upgrade to V12 can either done on the existing servers and then merge or I could build a new VBR server, install Veeam V12 and migrate both servers to the new one. The on-prem jobs cover about 15 days or so, so I could just se
