Fun Friday: Milestones & Goals

Happy Friday! We’re over halfway to 2023 (sorry to depress you!), it’s not uncommon for people to start a new year with goals or wishes for the year. How are yours shaping up? Are you on track? Have you had a busy start to the year but still have time to get on track? Share how you’re doing and any achievements below! For me, I knew I was starting a new job, so I wanted to make sure I passed my probation (I did), move house (I have), and either advance my Azure, VMware or Kubernetes knowledge and pass an exam in one of these subjects, I haven’t yet but now I’m getting into a better frame of mind I can start on this! I also had a great year with my blog last year and I wanted to prove its not a fluke by getting a similar view count this year as last year, I’m also proud to say I’ve smashed that 😁 Your turn community!

Add Hyper-V to Virtual Infrastructure Failing

Please help with adding a Hyper-V host. Veeam 11. New Hyper-V Server > Credentials: Added Domain User to Administrators Group on Hyper-V Host. Veeam B&R and Hyper-V Host on same domain. Window Firewall Off:Windows Firewall On: RANT:Hours in, this is frustrating that Veeam doesn’t nip this in the bud and does not rely on MS technology (Ports, WMI...etc) to install, and shifts responsibility onto the customer and offers unhelpful dialog boxes and similar push back in forums.

Rename Copy Job to cloud

I created a test Backup Copy Job for a test to a new cloud provider, naming the job “provider test”.  Now I am switching to that provide and even with a new Copy Job the Server is appearing under the test job name.How can I rename job listed under Backups/Cloud to the new Copy job name?

Immutability Configuration in SOBR for backups with GFS

Hello,I would like to clarify the configuration of my capacity tier in my SOBR. I used a Wasabi bucket with object-lock enabled.I have a backup job set to run daily with 14 days retention and weekly synthetic fulls. I have a gfs policy defined with 6 monthly and 1 yearly.The immutability set on the capacity extent is 14 days. If my understand is correct all gfs backups that sit on the capacity tier still only immutable for the immutable days set on the capacity extent. Right?How do you protect this backup? I read a solution with AWS Glacier but I m not using AWS services.Regards.

Veeam Backup for Microsoft Azure: Updating Account Permissions

With the release of Veeam Backup for Microsoft Azure v4, I thought now would be a good time to discuss how to handle account permission changes. ubuntu 22.04: mlocate

Hi,after backuping ubuntu ever since without problems, the first fresh installed ubuntu 22.04 came up with this warning message in our latest veeam b&r 11: Failed to index guest file system. mlocate was not found.   As since ubuntu 22.04 the package mlocate is just a transitional package to plocate, there is no mlocate binary.So I did a ln -s plocate mlocate  and expected the message to be gone - but it keeps reporting, that mlocate was not found. updatedb and locate do not show any errors:root@ubuntu2204:/var/log# updatedb -Vupdatedb (plocate) 1.1.15Copyright (C) 2007 Red Hat, Inc. Veeam Backup for Microsoft Azure: Repository Backup has Failed

 Ever had your backups fail? I sure have! But it’s all part of the fun & games of learning exactly how these systems work.Recently I spun up another instance of Veeam Backup for Microsoft Azure, and as part of my security mindset, I configured some elements of hardening to my infrastructure. Well, I missed a setting that I’m going to share with you today. Worker Job Completed with Error So, I had Veeam Backup for Microsoft Azure working, my daily snapshot job was also running fine, but it was the daily backup that wasn’t working. Some of the key terms I could pick out from the logs were ‘Worker: <Resource Name> (IP Address:Port): job completed with error’, ‘Error: This request is not authorised to perform this operation’, ‘Status 403’, and ‘ErrorCode AuthorizationFailure’ were the error messages I was being greeted with. Dissecting the Errors The key hint here was the job task ‘Backing up <VM Name> to Backup Repository. Followed by the worker not being authorised.Within

Using same DR site for two cluster

Dears,I would like to ask if it is possible to let a sister company to replicate their vmware VMs servers to my replication site.Keep in mind i am replicating my VMs to a ESXI attached to a storage that has alot free space.Is it ok to let our sister company's veeam to connect the my esxi and they create replication jobs to replicate to my esxi aswell, so this esxi will be serving two companies as DR site at the same time and two different veeam servers communicating with it.

At a custmer side they deployed enterpise manager and connect backup server in it. but in a case format the machine and reinstall it but the problem is backup server popup please manage it like they want or update your lic key. but backup server told please manage the server with enterprise manager  case ----is enterprise manager is not availablei want to remove my machine with enterpise manager .

Happy Friday everyone! Sorry it’s been a bit quiet from me recently on this front, lets jump back into things with a new fun friday topic: Backup Designs That Sounded Better in Theory? Firstly, what do I mean by this? Recovery from Veeam Hardened Repository

Hello, everyone! I have been studying and doing some labs to better understand how the immutability on a Linux Repository works. This is my current Veeam Backup & Replication structure:- 1 Backup Job for VMware VMs;- 1 windows agent Backup Job for a physical machine;- 1 Backup Copy job for each of the previous jobs, with the hardened repository as the target. The hardened repository is a Ubuntu 20.04 LTS with a XFS disk. The SSH service is disabled and no gateway is set. The Veeam server was first configured to use a single-use credential.Everything works great! My question is:In a scenario where all the VMs, physical servers and Veeam server are lost, where all I have are the immutable backups, how should I approach the repository?What I did so far was:- Start the SSH service of the hardened repository, open the port 22 in OS firewall;- Get a separate windows machine running and install Veeam B&R in it;When I tried to add the Linux repository to the new Veeam server, it could

Backup To Tape Strategy

Hii Guys, I'm trying to find a backup to tape strategy on veeam, our company has the following two backup policies:1. Daily Policy- Backup job runs every day, job schedule starts at 07:00 PM and must be finished before 06:00 AM.- Using the Forever forward incremental method- Backup defragment is done once a week- Backup Health Check is done once a week- Retention policy is set for 30 restore points2. Using Nutanix Objects? You might be in violation of MinIO licensing

This wasn’t on my 2022 bingo card… According to MinIO, Nutanix Objects has been using MinIO for years without disclosing this, and after years of discussions, they’ve been unable to find a good faith solution to this. Therefore MinIO have revoked Nutanix’s licenses to MinIO software. I don’t want to misinterpret this as MinIO’s blog post has strong legal vibes to it, but MinIO are advising customers of Nutanix Objects may have legal & security risks by continuing to use Nutanix Objects. You can find MinIO’s statement here: https://blog.min.io/nutanix-objects-violates-minios-open-source-license/As of the time of writing, I’ve been unable to find any announcements from Nutanix relating to their perspective on the matter, via their social media, blog or news resources. If you utilise Nutanix Objects, you certainly need to question how this impacts you, and sooner rather than later!
