3 reasons why direct SAN restore failover to NBD

Backups of VMware vSphere VMs can be done with one of three transport modes. Each of these modes also provide the possibility to restore data. This post is about 3 reasons why direct SAN restore failover to NBD. Incorrect VMDK typeVeeam can only perform direct SAN restore with thick provisioned VMDKs. If any disk of a VM is thin provisioned, restore will not leverage SAN directly. Both, thick eager and lazy zeroed are supported. In my experience, eager zeroed is much faster from a restore point of view! So I recommend, to use this format.Note: you should not rely on the provisioning type you chose at VMDK creation: Thick provisioned disk can become thin if it is expanded.Fortunately, Veeam provides the possibility to change disk type in restore wizard. So you can be sure to use thick VMDKs when you enter this within the wizard. vSphere 7U1 Standard vSwitch/Port Group Connectivity Issue

Hello Community!This will be a non-Veeam post today, but I thought it would be worthwhile to share about a vSphere network issue I encountered recently, and the steps I took to resolve it, in case any of you experience a similar occurrence. PROBLEMI had 1 ESXi Host in a Cluster which, when VMs in a certain subnet were connected to a segregated vSS and PG, there would be no network connectivity. No pings. No network connection of any kind. I use vSS and not vDS, so one might think there could be a configuration issue, rightfully so. But, I use PowerCLI to configure my Hosts, and all of them were configured using this same PCLI script, so the chances of that being the case was virtually zero. And, the other Hosts in this Cluster, when VMs were connected to the same subnet (vSS & PG), connectivity was fine. Veeam Ports Finder Tool

Hi all. The EMEA SAs have recently just added a new tool to https://www.veeambp.com called the ‘Ports Finder’ (aka Ports Directory). The idea behind the tool was to make it easier to find all the ports you need for a Veeam solution. It doesn’t provide mapping for specific hosts or any of the advanced feature that the Veeam Ports Tool provides.Currently it only has VMware and Hyper-V ports; however, that will be changing soon and will have:VMware Hyper-V AHV Enterprise Manager All Explorers Windows, Linux and Solaris Agents VBR Integration with AWS and Azure Veeam ONE O365 VDROAll the port mappings were pulled directly from their respective webpages so they are 100% accurate. I created a previous post on Nimble Storage Integration with Veeam, discussing how you can potentially recover data even if a backup job’s Deleted VMs retention setting has passed. [Quicktip] Enterprise Manager v11 shows latest file version only

I hope, this post safes you the time I spent to figure this out.Normally I do not install Veeam Enterprise Manager (EM) unless there is a use case - like indexed file search. With it, EM can search a index - created at backup time. So no mount of restore-points is necessary to find files in backups. For more information see here:https://helpcenter.veeam.com/docs/backup/em/understanding_search.html?ver=110According to my knowledge, index search is able to lists all file-versions in selected time range. For this you have to filter your search:ProblemIn multiple VBR v11 + EM environments I had the situation that index search results shows just latest file version in result. I spent some time to troubleshoot, ask colleagues, recherche. Hi all I hope you all read my post about the 3-2-1-1-0 golden rule - 3-2-1-1-0 Golden Backup Rule | Veeam Community Resource Hub.Perfect in combination with Veeam Backup & Replication to save your backups as good as possible to protect them against ransomware, hackers, ...But what with Veeam Backup for Office 365 ?There is no built-in option for creating backup copy jobs, so there is by my knowledge no option to copy the backups on your primary repository to a secondary repository.I know, Office 365 is running on high-available infrastructure but in case of ransomware or a hacker on your VBO365 server, all your backups can be deleted. So the rule 3-2-1-1-0 should also be implemented in this case.An option could be : create a second job with the same settings as the primary job except writing to another repository. Then you have a second copy of your O365 data. In my opinion that is not a good solution : twice the network-traffic needed (not ideal if VBO365 is running on-premises an

Are all my virtual machines being backed up correctly and within the required RPO? Of course!I think..., or not 😉? Do I implement best practices in creating jobs?If using vSphere, do I use folders or tags or use whole clusters to add virtual machines to the job?If using HyperV, do I use whole clusters or hosts or in case of using SCVMM do I use tags? Yes, OK, that ’s fine, did I not forget a new VM giving the correct tag or putting in the correct vSphere folder?Yes it can happen to everyone to forget a VM putting correctly to the backup job (automatically or manually). [Quick Tip] Nimble Storage Integration VM Recovery

Just wanted to share a VM recovery tip with you all I recently discovered when needing to recover a VM no longer being processed by a VBR Backup Job it was in due to Deleted VM Maintenance Schedule. To assist with my recovery, you have to be utilizing Storage Integration technology with Veeam. My specific environment uses Nimble Adaptive Flash Arrays, so be sure to understand how your Storage Vendor’s snapshot technology works before assuming my “tip” will apply to your environment. Let’s assume you’re backing up VMs with vSphere Tags and during tag maintenance you mis-apply a tag, or forget to (re) apply a tag to a VM needing to be backed up. Or maybe you use vSphere “containers” to back up your VMs (i.e. Datastores, VM Folders), and you mistakingly move a VM out of the Container and the VM is no longer getting backed up. As a good Backup Admin does, such that you are, you review your VBR jobs daily to verify they succeeded: BOOM! Well done, Backup Admin! But, you weren’t being as t

Windows scheduled tasks get problematic slower over time

The following post is not directly related to backup. I hope it is helpful anyway.At a customers backup server a very strange behavior was observed. After a few days without problems, scheduled tasks never seem to get finished. So a current running – never ending – task prevents the next run from starting. A reboot of the server resolved the problem – for a few days.SolutionAfter a research I found out, scheduled tasks get started with a lower priority than interactively started tasks. See my scheduled PowerShell script in screenshot here.Normally this is not a big deal. It does not matter when tasks like reports last longer than manually started. Nevertheless they should at least finish.The solution is to rise the priority of scheduled tasks. Unfortunately this cannot simply be set in the GUI. It can be done in a few steps, I list here.Start Windows Task Scheduler, right-click your task and select Export… and save XML file to a temporary location. Edit XML file with an editor of your

VMware vCenter Appliance: image backup is deprecated since 7.0

I had the discussion two times last week, so I think it is worth sharing here.You may have noticed, VMware deprecated image level backup of its vCenter Appliance (VCSA) with vSphere 7. What does this mean? Basically, it is still supported to do image level backup and restore with VCSA 7.0. But it will not be supported in future releases. Notice that U1 and U2 are still 7.0 versions. With 7.n, with n>0, VMware will not support image restore of VCSA any more. From my perspective, this step was taken because problems arise when restoring this Linux appliance. I have seen many appliances requiring a filesystem check after restore or crash. When you are lucky, everything works fine afterwards. If not, you have to file a support ticket.To avoid this, VMware offers a new way for VCSA backup. Since 6.5 it is possible to run file-based backups and restore of VCSA. Since 6.7 this can be scheduled. With this, new protocols are supported as well: FTP, FTPS, HTTP, HTTPS, SFTP, NFS, or SMB.
