Veeam13 Deployment Licensing Error

I am trying to deploy Veeam Data Platform v13 on my windows server however i am getting the error “License is not valid for this product” when attaching the license to it before the deployment. Deployment cant proceed like the previous versions with no license.
The foundation license was purchased late September before V13 was released so I suspected that was the case, I went into the license portal and generated a new license for V13 however the same error occurred. I have the windows defender the Kaspersky antivirus disabled to avoid having any error in deploying the license however I am stuck here.

Hi @mhakmd have you checked if you can update the License in your License Portal?

I had the issue the other way around when i try to get a trial license to run with a v12 version and had the same Error. I had to talk to our veeam representative to get a file that works with v12 because the trial Keys only worked with v13.

In you can´t update the key via portal it would be the best to raise a Case with veeam support so that they can check and assist you.

Thanks Chalid for checking, yeah I tried to update the key via the portal but still wont work. I have opened the case now with Veeam, hopefully to resolve it.

Hi @mhakmd -

The only thing I can think of is maybe somehow you’re using a “Promo license” which doesn’t license Veeam Products, but rather adds instances to existing perpetual & subscription licenses?

https://helpcenter.veeam.com/docs/vbr/userguide/types_of_licenses.html?ver=13#free-licenses-

The only suggestion I have really is to contact the Veeam licensing team.

https://www.veeam.com/faq.html

Keep us posted how it goes.

@mhakmd You can quickly check what license you have by opening the .lic file in a text editor.

A production license will show,
License type = Perpetual or Subscription
Package = Foundation

A trial license will show,
License type = Evaluation
Package = Premium

If your license shows Perpetual + Foundation, it confirms you are using a valid production license. However, with Veeam Data Platform v13 the installer only accepts licenses that are explicitly issued under the Veeam Data Platform product family. Legacy Backup and Replication production licenses even though valid, will be rejected during installation. Veeam license team or Sales rep can help you to covert the legacy license to V13 Veeam Data Platform license.

I had the exact same thing yesterday then doing an update on two systems. Both gave the same error “License is not valid for this product”.  I downloaded a new License from Pulse (MSP Rental license) for each, added it, and got the same error again. Rebooted windows as it has just installed the .Net 8 update as part of the update and wanted to make sure nothing was lingering.  After that it worked. After the upgrade was able to log into the new console and re-enable all the jobs etc…   In addition to that, today, when I tried logging into the v13 console I got a "failed to load license from backup services", again on both servers (they were built in tandem, action for action). This appeared to be a clue (https://www.veeam.com/kb4677), but was not the solution as this error is not in the logs.  I rebooted the server, and again, it let me log into the v13 console.  Console is local to the VBR v13 server, not remote.  ...waiting a few hours to see if it lets me log in again.

Applying the latest windows server updates seems to have solved it.

Hmm...interesting “fix”. 🤔  Maybe MS fixed something with .NET? Regardless..thanks for sharing @Dragon5

I agree that is kinda odd, after the upgrade to v13 and the post install reboot it worked just fine, the subsequent log in was where it failed…. anyway, working now
