Always on SQL, app aware questions...

Hi, I'm a bit confused with the documentation for setting up MS SQL backups for an always on availability group.

Our set-up - veeam 11 (can't upgrade yet)

4 dbs, 2 per site in an always on availability group, with windows clustering on top.

Veeam is in a management domain, which connects to VMware hosts to backup vms from the user domains.

How do I go about setting this up? Is it even possible in this set up?

Any assistance appreciated!

Here is some information to get started as Veeam does support it -

https://helpcenter.veeam.com/docs/backup/vsphere/alwayson_support.html?ver=120

https://helpcenter.veeam.com/docs/backup/plugins/mssql_plugin_aon.html?ver=120

Thanks Chris, but as I understand it the plugin only came in with v12?  Unfortunately we are stuck on 11 for the next couple of months and I just can’t work out how to do it or even if it is possible in 11.

I’ve looked through all the docs, but I find the information conflicting - if anyone can’t talk me through it I would be extremely grateful

Thanks

Here is the documentation on how to set up the backup from Veeam which will work with v11 - https://helpcenter.veeam.com/docs/backup/agents/cluster_always_on_hiw.html?ver=120

It requires using the agent for the backup.

Thanks Chris, but (and forgive me if I’m wrong) but because the domains being backed up are segregated and the VM’s only being available to veeam via the vcentre connection, I don’t think I can set up a protection group for these servers (as veeam can’t see the domains or windows computer accounts within directly)?

No with the agent setup you can add any servers using IP or computer name it is not only reliant on vCenter.  Computer name might require an entry in the hosts file though.

Hello @tom4784

You need to create a Protection group using SQL cluster AD object, once it is added, it will detect all nodes and install Veeam agent. Then, you can create a backup job based on the protection group.
