Veeam Backup & Replication Version 12.3.1.1139 – March 2025 Release Overview

Veeam Backup & Replication version 12.3.1.1139 was released on March 19, 2025. This update includes important security patches, new features, and enhancements. In this post, we'll cover the main highlights, such as security updates, improved platform support, and added functionalities.

Security Updates

Veeam Backup & Replication 12.3.1.1139 includes critical security patches addressing important vulnerabilities:

  • CVE-2025-23120 (Critical - CVSS 9.9):
This vulnerability allows authenticated domain users to execute remote code, making it a serious concern for domain-joined backup servers. It’s worth noting that this vulnerability only affects domain-joined backup servers, which goes against the Security & Compliance Best Practices. It's crucial for users to apply this update as soon as possible.

New Features and Enhancements

This release introduces several new features and enhancements across various platforms and functionalities:

Platform Support

  • VMware vSphere 9.0 Readiness:
This release includes preliminary support for VMware vSphere 9.0 based on pre-release builds. Full official support will be confirmed after a complete regression testing of the general availability (GA) build.
  • IBM Db2 Plug-in:
    The IBM Db2 plug-in now supports version 12.1 of Db2 and SLES 12 SP5.
  • SAP HANA Plug-in:
Support is extended to SAP HANA 2.0 SPS 08 and SLES 15 SP6 for SAP HANA on IBM Power.

Microsoft Entra ID Backup

  • Conditional Access Policy Protection:
Protection of conditional access policies has been backported from the upcoming major release, making it available in this version as an option for users in Essentials, Advanced, and Premium editions.
  • License Consumption Logic Update:
A new license consumption logic update ensures that licenses for external (guest) and disabled users are no longer consumed. Licenses associated with previously licensed objects will be released automatically 30 days after installing version 12.3.1. Alternatively, these licenses can be revoked immediately using the License Information dialog.

Nutanix AHV and Proxmox VE

  • Nutanix AHV:
The experimental support for malware detection, guest file indexing, and application-aware processing has been removed, except for database log file shipping, which remains experimental. However, this update requires an upgrade to version 12.3.1 for it to take effect.
  • Proxmox VE:
The Proxmox VE plugin has been enhanced with new features, such as support for non-root users to register Proxmox, Open vSwitch (OVS) networking, Object Storage API (SOSAPI), and Nested Pools for backup job scopes. Additionally, backup performance has been significantly improved.

VMware vSphere Enhancements

  • Instant VM Recovery Engine Improvements:
The Instant VM Recovery engine has been optimized to support up to 1000 VMs per backup server and up to 200 VMs per vPowerNFS server. Additionally, the readiness check for VM migration to production storage has been improved.
  • Datastore Disconnect After Instant VM Recovery:
vPower NFS datastores will now automatically disconnect after an Instant VM Recovery session is completed, reducing alarms and misleading capacity planning calculations caused by disconnected datastores.

Malware Detection and Internet Proxy Support

  • Custom Internet Proxy Support:
The Veeam Threat Hunter now supports custom internet proxies for downloading threat signature updates. This can be configured through the registry on the Mount Server.

Object Storage Enhancements

  • S3-Compatible Object Storage Compatibility Improvements:
The backup server will now ignore errors caused by S3-compatible object storage systems using unconventional storage class names. Additionally, automatic bucket creation is now the default for newly created S3-compatible object storage repositories.

Secondary Storage Integrations

  • Dell Data Domain Support:
This release adds support for Dell Data Domain DD OS versions 8.2 and 8.3 as backup repositories.
  • Microsoft SQL Server Plug-in:
Performance improvements for the Microsoft SQL Server plug-in now enable parallel streams for deduplication appliances, enhancing backup speed even when backing up a single database.

Enhanced Security and Backup Performance

  • Configuration Database Security:
TLS connection support has been added for PostgreSQL configuration databases hosted on external servers, enhancing security for users leveraging remote configurations.
  • Email Notifications:
OAuth 2.0 support for email notifications is now available for nonstandard Azure regions, including U.S. Government, China, and Germany regions.
  • Veeam Vault V2 Upgrade:
Veeam Vault now automatically upgrades backup repositories to V2, enhancing security and user experience through improved Entra ID authentication.

Resolved Issues

This release also addresses several key issues, including:

  • Backup Deletion and Metadata Issues:
The backup console no longer prompts for a decryption password when deleting encrypted backups, and the legacy per-VM backup file format issue preventing backups from appearing in the console has been fixed.
  • Nutanix AHV Issues:
A variety of issues were resolved, including problems with job scheduling, quiescence settings not being communicated to Nutanix clusters, and retention policies incorrectly deleting restore points prematurely.
  • Malware Detection Updates:
A bug where signature updates would ignore system-wide internet proxy settings has been fixed, improving the reliability of Veeam Threat Hunter.

How to Update

To update to version 12.3.1 from version 12.3.0.310, use the VeeamBackup&Replication_12.3.1.1139_20250315_update.iso file. For new deployments or upgrades from earlier versions (11a, 12, 12.1, or 12.2), download the latest 12.3.1 ISO from the Veeam website.

For detailed instructions on upgrading, always review the Upgrade Checklist to ensure a smooth transition to the latest version.

Veeam Backup & Replication 12.3.1.1139 brings important updates that improve security, backup performance, and platform support. It includes fixes for critical vulnerabilities, better compatibility with VMware vSphere, and enhanced support for object storage. This update is essential for all users to ensure more efficient and secure backup operations. Be sure to apply it soon to protect your systems from known risks. Upgraded my lab and it worked well.  Faster than normal upgrade with the Upgrade ISO file.  Seemed faster.  Some good features in this release.

Thanks for the overview! Many great features in this release, but I believe it should be noted that this behavior is not enabled by default. It can be enabled by adding the following registry key:

Key Location: HKLM\SOFTWARE\Veeam\Veeam Backup and Replication\
Value Name: vPowerNFSUnmountDatastore
Value Type: DWORD (32-bit) Value
Value Data: 1
