I should have highlighted ZIP your files. 🤣. . Restoring millions of small files takes an extremely long time from LTO. You will also have better performance from disk and cloud. Zipping at the right level is important as if you do it too high in the folder structure, your restores will be huge even if you need to retrieve a small file. If you ZIP too low, the benefits are less and it will be time consuming. Create a script and there is a good chance this will be “per folder” decision unless your data is already very organized. Keep in mind the program you are zipping with will also utilize memory differently and trying to ZIP multi TB files may require a powerful server with A LOT of memory. 

 

With LTO drives the potential bandwidth is very high for restores if you do this, Unfortunately these archives started long before I started at this company. There are 10’s if not 100’s of millions of extremely small files 😟.
