Another Wednesday..another Community-submitted VMCE Practice Question. Again, this week’s question is provided by @Michael Funke . Thank you for supporting the VMCE Community Michael! For others in the Community...if you have a question you’d like to submit, by all means do. Just shoot me a DM with your question, explain why options are not correct, and why 1 option is correct, and provide your URL reference. That’s all there is to it 😉

For those new to the VMCE page, please hide your comment (guess). To do so → before typing your response, click the ellipsis (3 dots) icon on the far right of the format toolbar at the top in your comment box and select the Spoiler option. This will place a ‘hide comment’ text box in your comment box area. Click inside this hide comment text box and start typing your answer (guess). Be careful to not click outside of the box or your comment will show after saving. We want your comment to not show after clicking the Send button so others can take full advantage of these practice questions. Also, please no need to do a ‘quote’ comment of this question; I would like to keep these practice questions neat. Let me know if you have issues. Good luck on the question!

Due to the size of your server environment, you decided to implement Microsoft SQL Server Enterprise as your Veeam Backup Configuration Database. In the coming weeks, the version of Microsoft SQL Server used will be out of support, posing a potential security threat and uncertainty in your backup environment. Because of this, you decide to use PostgreSQL as an alternative. What is the Veeam supported method to migrate your Configuration Database from MSSQL to PostgreSQL?

  1. This happens automatically when updating from Veeam 12.2 to 12.3
  2. This can be triggered in the Veeam Console and runs as a background process
  3. Configuration Database migration is done by taking a Configuration Database backup and then performing a restore
  4. The MSSQL database needs to be uploaded to your MyVeeam Support portal where Support will convert the DB within 24 hours
  1. Configuration Database migration is done by taking a Configuration Database backup and then performing a restore.

Great practice question!

The answer is C. Migrate using a configuration database backup and restore.

@coolsport00 , thank you so much for these! I had to re-up my VMCE last week and used the backlog of your VMCE study question posts here in the community to help myself study up and I’m happy to say I’ve passed yet another VMCE. These have been so helpful to me for refreshing existing knowledge and learning new things! It’s really great that you do these for all of us :)

My choice is C. Configuration Database migration is done by taking a Configuration Database backup and then performing a restore

I’d also would also like to point out these user guide references since it could be something to keep in mind in the real world - if you’re migrating to a new PostgreSQL instance that was not installed by the Veeam installer (such as installing PostgreSQL on another server) you’ll want to tune it even for a migration:

Migrating Configuration Database to PostgreSQL Server - User Guide for VMware vSphere

“Important

After the restore process, make sure that PostgreSQL target instance is configured according to the recommended hardware resources values. You can modify settings of PostgreSQL target instance using the Set-VBRPSQLDatabaseServerLimits cmdlet. For more information, see Veeam PowerShell Reference.”

Adjusting PostgreSQL Instance Configuration - User Guide for VMware vSphere

But I wonder: if doing a migration from MSSQL to the local PostgreSQL instance installed by the VBR installer is the “tuning” still needed?

Sorry everyone...but I got busy on Friday (and also yesterday, it appears)...and forgot to post the answer to last week’s question 🤷🏻‍♂️🤪 So, here it is below…

Let’s run through each of the possible options to narrow down what could be correct → a. DB upgrading via VBR upgrade isn’t possible, so this option isn’t correct; b. there is no option to upgrade or migrate the DB to a different DB via the VBR Console, so this option isn’t correct; converting to PSSQL can be done via Config DB backup and then performing a restore, so this is possible; d. Veeam doesn’t offer uploading your DB to their Support to convert it to PSSQL, so this is not correct. That means c. Configuration Database migration is done by taking a Configuration Database backup and then performing a restore is our correct answer.
