Follow up for everybody trying to help:I exposed our VBR to the Hetzner Server, all ports are set to accept at the moment From Hetzner Server to the VBR when I ping for the certain ports its accessible VBR uses Public IP when communicating with Hetzner Server and back I still have the same issue.

Sure Backup - Best Practices

HI @NemanjaJanicic - I would say there really isn’t any ‘best practices’ that I’ve seen on Surebackup. How you run it will be dependent on your org’s needs. For ex, do you want/need to have a cycle where you test backups? Do you want/need to occasionally test Secure Restore to test your backups for malware? Do you have a need to occasionally test apps within your org for updates? How you run, and how often you run your Surebackup jobs will depend on how you answer those questions. As far as setting up Surebackup, you simply just need to follow the User Guide steps which discuss how Surebackup works, verification tests, application groups, labs, then creating a job. Let us know if you have further questions. Hello, it’s a good thing to a have a dedicated server for that purpose. You will need a licensed host if you are using vmware. I love the blog post from @Nico Losschaert Recap : Surebackup - what, why and how | Veeam Community Resource Hub I think the best pratices for surebackup always dependsof your company needs and how far you want to dig the subject. Do you need to verify your backup everyday? How far do you need to test it? Hi @BertrandFR,We are using Hyper-V environment.I would like to just test ping, heartbeat, the “basic” stuff so that I know that machines are recoverable.Then later I can start configuring Application Groups a bit more in depth.We have sql servers, DC’s, web-servers (nginx), etc…But for the first hand just so that I configure the “basic” stuff. Yes, everything should stay contained in the DR site for data transfer other than what Joe said about the Metadata. BCJ jobs transfer from the repository where they read the files to the secondary location. In my understanding the data will be transferred from your secondary repo to the VHR inside the DR side. Metadata is transferred to and from the Veeam server, but this is not a huge amount of data. Veeam LHR and iSCSI

Hi, it doesn’t need internet access, just local network access for communication to VBR. You can prevent the Synology management interfaces from being connected so only the VM network can communicate too, to prevent any backdoor access. So the Access to VHR can be restricted as much as it can be.For the Synology Itself I should leave some network connection because of the security and firmware updates. I will give my best to restrict it as much as it can be with the firewall and rules.

https://www.synology.com/en-global/dsm/feature/virtual_machine_manager If you’ve got Synology storage then toughen up the security to the device and run the LHR as a VM 🙂 iSCSI will be slower VS direct storage access, it’ll be easier to secure this way too 🙂 Does it need to have internet access?Can I configure just to have access to Internal network since I’m planning to “copy” Backup Copy Jobs that are in the second Synology NAS also located in the same location.Second NAS is connected via iSCSI to Hyper-V VM over Ethernet cable.Thank you for the great info 😁

Hi, Before you proceed with this, I want to ask, have you considered the security risks of this? With network attached storage, and a virtual machine as the host, you’re making it really easy to undo the security benefits of LHR. As a VM, there’s no way to disable console access, so access being gained to the hypervisor running the VM means access to the console, making it easy to reboot into single user mode as root and then destroying the data. As the storage is shared over the network, the Synology becomes an attack point, why bother trying to destroy the LHR when I can log into the Synology and delete the disks, thereby breaking the immutability. If you want to proceed down this route, does your Synology support running VMs? I’d suggest isolating your Synology from the network other than allowing its VMs to have network access, and then running LHR as a VM on the Synology with virtual disks interacting with the underlying storage. WAN-Acc in HB mode does extra compression and does make use of digest files to rule out non-changed blockes. I can even be useful up to 10GBit/s if your hardware is powerful enough. Maybe support was relating to LB mode here. It’s hard to estimate the impact for your situation, because it is highly dependent on your data. But I would give it a try. Could give you some 50% more speed if you’re lucky. LB mode does not seem worthwhile trying, as there is to much overhead here to justify using it with 100 Mbit/s and above. Did you set the compression in BJC to high or extreme already? Could also be worthwhile trying. If you leave it to automatic, you will just transfer source backup data “as is”. Assumingly it is compressed as “optimal” only. You might also consider seeding the backup by transporting the VBK manually (e.g. ext-HDD) and mapping the BCJ afterwards. Then you would not need to transfer the full but only the increments afterwards. I already tried it and got errors for it.This

BCJ Performance

Hello Nemanja. Your performance seems to be in the correct order of magnitude with your line stats. What exactly do you mean by 1Gbps but only around 750 Mbps? So your line does only deliver ¾ of the nominal speed? Can you make sure that no other tasks are using the line while the backup is BCJ is running? Anyhow, with 750 Mbps you could in theory expect up to 93 MB/s (https://www.wolframalpha.com/input?i=750+Mbps+in+MB%2Fs). Your edging at 43 MB/s which is around 50% of the expected maximum. There is always quite some overhead in the stack. So I’d expect no more than ~70 MB/s. You never see the theoretical maximum here. Did you try WAN-Acc in high-bandwidth mode? From 1G upwards the caching of low-bandwidth mode tends to be less efficient. I would expect an improvement here. HB-Mode is even less resource intensive as you don’t need any SSD caching. @NemanjaJanicic - you can't do this. You're confusing how BCJs work. These jobs are not backups. They don't backup the VMs. BCJs copy Backup files. They're copies of the vbk/vib files which contain VMs. They are just transferring the files from Primary Storage to Secondary Storage. It’s just confusing to me why they use Forward Incrementals, there is no sense to me. If original Backup Storage is not configured in that way. It’s all confusing a little bit for me. Then when I think about it its also possible just to create again normal backup jobs and send it via wan to Secondary Storage with same configurations like Primary Storage? Yes you could do another backup job to secondary storage using WAN accelerators which can have a similar retention policy instead of BCJ. Retention Policy - Backup Copy Job with GFS

You can't create synthetic or active fulls for BCJs. Those jobs are only in the Forever Fwd method. You can only create additional GFS Fulls with it. That is what I’m trying to achieve, with GFS enabled also.

The info provided for Fwd Increm I believe is inaccurate. They provided what to do for Backup Jobs, not Backup Copy. Is that what you were wanting @NemanjaJanicic ? You can't create Fwd Increm with BCJs. I would like to have at least 2 Full Backups via Backup Copy Job on our Secondary Location.So to have something like this:1. Synthetic Full - Friday2. Increment - Mon3. Increment - Tue4. Increment - Wed5. Increment - Thu6. Synthetic Full - Friday 7. Increment - Mon8. Increment - Tue9. Increment - Wed10. Increment - Thu11. Synthetic Full - FridayAnd now when the third Synthetic Full is createad I would like for first cycle from 1-5 to be deleted.Is this too much for Backup Copy Job or? Its really complicated.Backup Jobs are far more easy..

Two of the restore points are full backups (2x GFS Weekly), but these are also "part of your retention setting" and also receive the GFS flag. Backup Copy Jobs Configuration

I see what you’re saying now. Yes, I think the BCJ should copy all the source Backups as they are on the Repo it resides on. But, BCJ files are their own files as well. Again, from the Guide link I provided you, it says the following: If the backup chain is created in the forward or forever forward incremental backup method, Veeam Backup & Replication copies data blocks from the first full backup and a set of incremental backups. So, it “should” copy your Backup job data as you have it configured. But, the BCJ job files themselves are as I shared - in the FFwd mode. The BCJ restore points do not mirror Backup job restore points. I would reach out to Support for further clarification, as I understand your confusion. Yes, I need to take a closer look on few topics regarding this.I want to make it perform as best it can be.Thank you for your help.

Backup Copy Jobs Configuration

There’s no way I know of to have ‘occasional Fulls’, except to configure GFS settings in your BCJ to do weekly Fulls and maybe 1 or 2 monthly’s. Just depends on your needs/goals. Isn’t Backup Copy Jobs copying everything from Primary to Secondary Location?Shoudln’t that be the same exact copy of Backup files from Primary on target locations
