VEEAM SOFTWARE APPLIANCE - Tape library

Hello,

I’m currently planning to migrate from Windows VBR to VEEAM VSA.

I’m currently working with tape library, when i installed the VSA, and logged via the WEB interface, i was amazed that the console doesn’t support adding tape servers (Am i missing something ?)

Installing the desktop console will fix this ? the desktop client support creating tape libraries ?

If working with the client desktop console, the MFA is still supported? we can benefit from the update feature of the VSA or updating the console should be manually ? is there a way to disable the VSA Backup and replication WEB UI to keep only the console working ?

Thanks in advance

Tape:

You are correct—the Web UI in v13 is currently a "next-generation preview" and does not yet have feature parity with the desktop console.

  • Console Requirement: To add a Tape Server or manage Tape Libraries, you must use the Veeam Backup & Replication Console (the desktop application) 📟.

  • Tape Server Role: The VSA itself (being Linux-based JeOS) cannot act as a Tape Server. You still need a separate 64-bit Windows (or compatible Linux) machine to host the Tape Server role and physically connect to your library.

  • Adding Tape: Once you open the desktop console and connect it to your VSA, you will see the full Tape Infrastructure tab where you can add your Tape Server and inventory your library.

MFA and Console Management:

MFA Support: Multi-Factor Authentication is fully supported for the desktop console 🛡️. Interestingly, v13 treats the Web UI (Host Management) and the Backup Console as two separate entities for MFA. You can enable MFA for the console users within the VBR settings, and it will prompt you for a code upon login, just like the Windows-based version did.

Disabling the Web UI:

  • Console Toggle: On some v13 appliance builds (like the Hardened Repository profile), the Web UI on port 10443 can actually be toggled off or on via the text-based console (TUI) of the appliance 🔒.

  • Network Restriction: Most administrators prefer to simply block traffic to the Web UI ports (typically 443 for the backup interface or 10443 for host management) at the firewall level, ensuring only the ports required for the Desktop Console remain open.

Hi,

Yes, load the desktop console. There’s some functionality still only found there for now. MFA can be used and is recommended.

Hi @jihad.bayali - Welcome to the Community!

The Web UI is in its initial iteration (version/release). Just like the VMware vCenter Web UI when it first came out, there are quite a few features not integrated with the Web UI as of yet.

Yes, Tape is still supported and you have to use the Windows Veeam Console for it, and for most tasks currently. Also, yes… MFA is still supported (& of course recommended). You can update the VSA from the Web UI, and when needing to update the Windows Veeam Console, yes...you have to perform that update as before.. manually, or when opening the Console after a VSA upgrade, you should be prompted (as has always been the case) an upgrade is needed and it will do so automatically.

No...there’s no way to disable the Web UI that I’m aware of.

Hope that helps.

Best.

Yes, load the console. These are the limitations of the new WebUI. They are working to add the features below.

Configuration Backup
Replication Jobs
Scale-Out Backup Repos
Backup Copy Jobs
Credentials
Proxy Configuration
Tape Configuration

For the current differences between the 2 from a high-level, you can review the User Guide. But again...nothing has been taken out of the Console UI. It’s still fully featured:

Hi,

I just want to make you aware that you can’t deploy Tape Server components onto your VSA so you’ll need to have a separate server for this.

Tape drivers typically require elevated permissions on Linux systems which is incompatible with the security framework that VSA is built upon because nothing should require elevated permissions/root.

Thanks,

Michael

If you go to the WebUI login page, there is a link just below where you enter your credentials that allows you download just the Console executable.

That what i was trying to do but weirdly, when i download the client from the WEBUI, it download the old version : 13.0.1.180, even if the build of the VSA is 13.0.1.2067….

When i download it and execute it, it asks for update...when i do the update it give the following error (See attached).

I don’t know if you ever encounter this.

I am not running v13 at the moment. You should be able to use the full ISO of the build you’re on then.
