Installation Error – “This action is only valid for products that are currently installed”

Environment:

  • Windows 10 / 11 (Desktop edition)

  • Attempting to install Veeam Agent / Veeam Backup components

Description:
While trying to install Veeam, the process fails immediately with the following runtime error:

An error has occurred: Dieser Vorgang ist nur für Produkte gültig, die zurzeit installiert sind.

Translated: “This action is only valid for products that are currently installed.”

The installer runs, but the product does not appear in Programs & Features. Previous versions of Veeam were fully removed, including all files, services, and registry entries. Even after a clean install attempt, the installer fails silently or reports this error.

Steps Taken:

  1. Verified that all previous Veeam installations were removed.

  2. Cleared registry entries related to Veeam under:

    • HKLM\Software\Veeam

    • HKLM\Software\Wow6432Node\Veeam

  3. Deleted leftover installer files and MSI cache entries:

    • C:\Windows\Installer\*Veeam*

    • C:\ProgramData\Veeam

    • C:\Program Files\Veeam

    • C:\Program Files (x86)\Veeam

  4. Cleared BreadcrumbStore entries: C:\ProgramData\Microsoft\NetFramework\BreadcrumbStore

  5. Restarted the system and ran installer as Administrator.

Current Behavior:

  • Installer completes without visible error in some cases, but the software does not register or appear in Programs & Features.

  • Attempting to reinstall the agent still triggers the same error in logs or silently fails.

Suspected Cause:
Windows MSI Installer / BreadcrumbStore retains ghost references to prior Veeam installations, causing new installs to fail because the system believes conflicting versions still exist.

Request:
Seeking guidance on fully removing hidden installer references or performing a clean install that Windows will recognize correctly.

Thanks for the replies. I was able to solve it on the second PC; strangely, no such error occurred there after reinstalling. The issue is now resolved for me.

Agree with Chris here @Veeam_989 . I’d get ahold of Support to assist with the issue.

You could try looking at logs in C:\ProgramData\Veeam\Endpoint\, or look at Windows Events (I assume your using Agent for Windows?). But really..Support is probably your best route.

Glad to hear you resolved the issue.  If something common would be able to share with the community to help others?  If not all good.
