Hi @ec13,
there absolutely is. Try the Enterprise Manager. You have to enable Guest File System Indexing in the backup for the specific VM Backup Job and when you use Enterprise Manager the EM searches your file in an index database instead of the actual backup data.
You can one-click restore from there as well. You can also use a kind of quick search bar. Check this out:
Guest OS File Restore - Veeam Backup Enterprise Manager Guide

@lukas.k thank you! Can’t believe I am just now learning about this. I will definitely check it out.
There are so many times we're I see this option enabled on servers where it's not necessary, but this is one of those cases where guest indexing is exactly what you're looking for!
This is one of the things I pull my hair out over. I’m aware of EM but like Tommy said it needs guest indexing on and then loads the source server which is a pita. Wouldn’t it be nice it guest indexing could be a post processing activity, as in Veeam mounts the backup and walks the file system outside of backup hours. This would then allow me do do all sorts of fancy stuff for file recovery like searches (similar to EM) and even have a browse window that showed me what was on the server on a specific date and allow me to move backwards and forwards in time, select the files I want to restore and then Veeam can do the rest.
Can I raise this as a feature request?
I commented in the other one, but Enterprise Manager is 100% the way.
I’m using it on 30-60TB file servers. Once your initial jobs are in place, and it’s running incremental jobs, you won’t really notice a huge difference provided you have decent storage and hardware. It was minimal at best and my environment is huge.
I highly suggest it. You can search a file over multiple backups AND restore points to find what you need.
Start small, enable indexing on server or 2, and increase as you see it’s not that big of a deal. before you know it, file searches are so much better!
Thanks Scott. I work for an MSP so we have lots of VBRs and for a few customers we also have EM and we also have VSPC. I do feel other backup tools (like Networker and NetBackup) do file recovery better than Veeam which bugs me when I get into discussions with the other backup teams. It would be nice to have the EM functionality in VBR. I know EM also does self service but none of our customers want to go anywhere near that - they want a service. Too many different portals at the moment. Maybe they’ll all come together in VSPC. There is a good white paper on portals here Veeam_One_two_many_portals.pdf.
It’s good, but it could just be so much better!
“It would be nice to have the EM functionality in VBR.”
Now THIS I agree with. File search in Veeam would be amazing. and no need for additional software/servers.
That said, having a separate server/DB may be better on performance as I don’t want Veeam to blow up or slow down ever. If EM has an issue, it’s less critical. It would be interesting to see how much more it adds to the DB on average, and if there would be additional functionality if it was all kept together though.
Veeam is constantly evolving and gets better ever release. This sounds like a great feature request.
I index my file servers and would be happy to increase the space on my VBR server. Built in file search would be super handy.
