Self-Service Restore Portal Enhancements

Veeam Backup for Microsoft 365’s self-service restore portal was introduced in version 6 of this product and opened up the ability to grant end users access to their backup data and elevated users to restore orchestration over delegated data scopes. With the release of Veeam Backup for Microsoft 365 v7, the self-service portal received some enhancements as well. These major advancements include a refined navigation interface, the addition of Microsoft Teams restore and point-in-time restore options. Near-zero Replication for Veeam Repositories

In this demo I illustrate how you too can utilize the Pure Storage platform to provide rapid recovery and near-zero replication for your Veeam repositories.This lab consists of 2 Pure arrays, 2 vSphere clusters and a single VCenter. Though in this lab we could use other means to provide recovery, say through vSphere, this setup up was used to simply illustrate an easy to use and efficient DR strategy from Production to a DR cluster. Utilizing, Veeam.In this lab I built 2 Veeam servers. The first holds the Veeam Backup Server, proxy, and primary repository. The second runs the Veeam Disaster Recovery (VDRO) server and is the remote repository. In this lab – I do not utilize VDRO for recovery – that will come in a later post.Normally, in a Veeam scenario like this there would be 2 Veeam jobs providing restores and the local and remote sites. This is a story that is certain to have happened in a similar way to many of you.It is a story about a topic that is unfortunately becoming more and more current and frequent for those in the sys/backup admin job: managing the response to a ransomware attack.It was a Friday morning, the business week was drawing to a conclusion, and outside a pleasant spring sun was already warming the earth.As I arrived at the office, I was immediately notified that a client whose virtual infrastructure we were managing was no longer able to access some servers.In most cases, so many reports turn out to be minor issues, sometimes all it takes is a few tiny actions and everything gets sorted out.…  But this time, I don't know why, I had a bad feeling: we connect to the vCenter, it responds, fine, but as soon as we log in we see that most of the VMs are in an "inaccessible" state..what could have happened? Veeam Backup & Replication: NAS ‘Backup Proxies are Offline or Outdated’ incorrect error message

 Hi,I had a really strange error that was causing myself some issues recently, so I thought I would share the results.I was protecting a few NetApp ONTAP systems, integrated with Veeam as NAS Filers. And when I was trying to protect one of the NAS Filers, all the SMB shares were working successfully, but the NFS shares were not.What was worse though, I would always get an error that made no sense. If I reviewed the error message for my NFS logs I’d get the error that ‘All backup proxies are offline or outdated’, and then if I browsed into the Veeam logs, there were no tasks logs even being created for the failing shares. If I dug into the logs for the parent job, I could see this error I mentioned above, plus that no scale-out repository extents were available. This struck me as very confusing, as the SVMs contained both NFS shares, and SMB shares, all SMB shares were protected fine.I checked firstly that I had configured the NAS element of the NetApp integration to support NFS and tha

As today is World Backup Day 2024, I thought I’d share a tale from back in the day. This was from my first proper job after university, working as a First Line Analyst (i.e., Helpdesk). I was, to say the least, ‘green behind the ears,’ as the saying goes. It was also my first time navigating the world of an office environment and working with remote offices.Let me start by setting the scene. Windows Server 2003 and Windows Server 2003 R2 were the Server Operating Systems installed on bare metal boxes. Windows XP was THE Operating System of choice, and Windows 7 had just been released. The word ‘virtualisation’ was not even something we came across. We pretty much had dedicated hardware for each server role required. Domain controller? Physical box running that role. File Server? Veeam Backup Repository Design 🔥

In another Topic, I wrote  about designing a Proxy In This Topic will see about the repository design.We need to consider The key recommendation is to follow the 3-2-1 rule. Calculate 1 core and 4GB RAM per repository task slot. The recommended minimum for a repository is 2 cores and 8GB RAM.Sizing  The recommended amount of CPU for a repository is 1 core per concurrent configured task slot on a repository server. Configure at minimum a 2 core and 8GB RAM repository server to allow the operating system to be more responsive. When sizing task slots on a repository you have to understand when and how many task slots are consumed. Any write process will consume a task slot. So backing up 10 VMs in one job using per-job backup chains will only write one file (VBK/VIB) in the end - so it consumes one task slot. Running the same backup job with per-VM backup files will create one file per VM and thus can leverage up to 10 tasks slots (when available). Backup Copy Jobs, Agent Backups and
