New VRO Setup Help?

Hello,

I am newbie to the VRO software our client wants to upgrade to Veeam Premium and use VRO to setup Site to Site Failover and Failback one click both ways if possible.
Sites are VMware vCenter 8.02 on both sides the host in Main site A are 8.02 the host at DR site B are 7.03 Dell Servers on both sides
Dell PowerVault SANS same models at both sites shared storage for datastores
One Veeam B&R server for backups currently at Main stie A running backups to the local Synology nas.

Are there any how to step by step with best practice articles or videos (preferable)

Lot of questions:

Can I just install VRO at site a since it already has VBR and Veeam One?

Do I  spin up another VBR server and V1 and VRO  at site B

Do the VBR servers have to be same version site A is on 12.3 do I need to upgrade to 13.0?

What spec do you recommend for them ? I was thinking 4CPU , 16GB Memory, 120GB hdd space /thin provisioned
What order do we install VRO premium? I know there is a certain order when updating products?

Can we use Veeam Enterprise manager so we can control and see both sites? Is this recommended?

Can this be setup so if site A (Main Site) goes down then user can 1-Click the failover process so that Site B (DR site) can now run the business ?
Once Site A is backup we then failback to them 1-Click and all comes back up?

I know there is alot of planning and configuration of the IP's and Re IP's but will the user have to do any of this on the FB making the 1-Click process more involved ?

Any and all help and direction would be great I really want to learn this and do well.

Hi @VM2026 -

Welcome to the Community! For documentation...there is below:

https://helpcenter.veeam.com/docs/vro/userguide/overview.html?ver=13

I found a Veeam-sourced “Getting Started with VRO” YT video as well:

And you should be able to do some free Veeam University videos..if they have some on VRO on there. I haven’t searched for that but found the below:

https://www.veeam.com/support/training/veeam-university-free.html

Start there and see where it leads you 😊

Follow the links Shane posted and the video.  There are caveats to installing VRO on this page which outlines the requirements for the server - System Requirements - Veeam Recovery Orchestrator User Guide

Important

Consider the following limitations:

  • Installation of Orchestrator on a machine already running Veeam Backup & Replication or Veeam ONE is not supported.
  • Installation of Orchestrator on a machine running Microsoft Windows Server Core is not supported.
  • Installation of Orchestrator server components in a PostgreSQL database is not supported.
  • Installation of Orchestrator server or agent on a machine with the Domain Controller role is not supported.
  • Installation of Veeam Backup Enterprise Manager on the same machine that runs the Veeam Orchestrator Server Service is not supported.

@coolsport00 I saw that video while I was googling things before I posted it really doesnt show installation steps from downloading to installing and such.

Any others you know of?  Thaniks again

@Chris.Childerhose  Well I saw this right off the bat

  • Installation of Orchestrator on a machine already running Veeam Backup & Replication or Veeam ONE is not supported.

So  I need to create a whole new vmware vm server on both site A and B to configure and run VRO??

Thanks to you as well.

You would need to create a VRO server separately from any other Veeam servers yes.  It is also recommended to install it at the DR Site.  See this post from the VRO Heros Den on the community - How to: Prep for Veeam Recovery Orchestrator | Veeam Community Resource Hub

@Chris.Childerhose  Thanks for that article reading it now. Is it best practice to seperate the VBR server and the VRO?

In reading this article it says it installs the  VRO,VBR and V1 server on the new vm?

She also mentions this Check out the next blog to see how we can install and configure Orchestrator to strengthen our BC/DR posture….

I cannot find the other 3 blogs she mentions do you know where those links are?

Yes they should be separate.  VRO installs an embedded version of VBR/VONE on the system so don’t confuse that with a full fledge VBR server itself.

Unsure to be honest. Check the VRO group page and see maybe?

VRO will go in DR site and if that is B then there.  The documentation should explain the setups and that page on the community.

Hi @VM2026 -

“@coolsport00 I saw that video while I was googling things before I posted it really doesnt show installation steps from downloading to installing and such.

Sorry for the delayed response. There are a couple other sites you could try, but VRO training without some sort of paid subscription (Veeam Universitry Pro for example) seems to be a bit limited. I did find a couple other areas you can check, but probably not exactly what you’re after:

https://www.veeam.com/resources.html , and search/select for VRO

HOL: https://go.veeam.com/hands-on-lab-experience , and filter for VRO

Aside from what’s provided, your best bet is to follow the User Guide, install, and play with it. Hope this helps.

Best.

@coolsport00

Thank you again very helpful. The main thing that is giving me trouble is understanding where and what to setup would you be able to shed some light on that if possible?

My Scenario is this

Main Site A has a VBR and V1 server already using for backups

Site B (DR Site) does not have any veeam servers. (Hardware configs and such are in main original post above)

We want to backup all vms from site A to site B (DR) site so they will then boot up automatically and site B (DR) will run the business until Site A is restored from major outtage/disaster

My confusion is:

  1. Where do I install the VRO server on Site A and Site B or just Site B (DR) site? Mr. Chris @Chris.Childerhose  made the point its Site B (DR) site?
  2.  Which scenario is the best and easiest to setup and manage from this article I am thinking with our setup its going to be #1 but not sure??

Any insight on all this would be great.

Thank you both again

@VM2026 -- see below for your questions.

My confusion is:

  1. Where do I install the VRO server on Site A and Site B or just Site B (DR) site? Mr. Chris @Chris.Childerhose  made the point its Site B (DR) site? --- The VRO server goes in the DR Site only if you look at both Scenario 1 & 3.
  2.  Which scenario is the best and easiest to setup and manage from this article I am thinking with our setup its going to be #1 but not sure?? --- Scenario 1 or 3 would work but 1 seems the easiest.

@Chris.Childerhose

Thank you again sir

Do I need to install and new VBR server on the Site B DR site as well?

Requirements say Win 2025 work with VBR and VRO any issue you know of with using 2025?

Yes having the VBR at the DR site is the recommended approach.  Windows 2025 works as far as I know.  Hopefully others can share experiences.

@VM2026 -

As Chris shared, and from Emily’s article, the DR Site is where you should setup VRO. I’ve not setup VRO myself yet, so just going off Emily’s article and her suggestion (& what I’ve read from others’ posts). Of course, those 2 main scenarios (1 or 3) depend on what you’re using as well...Replicas or Backups (2 is for Storage Snapshots).

As far as Windows 2025 goes, I have a few of those environment and they haven’t yet given me any fits. But I am using them for other applications..not specific to Veeam/VRO. Veeam’s Sys Req’s support 2025 so you should be good to go there if you decide to go with that OS.

Emily does post most times.  We technically don’t “handle” it but help everyone on the community.  Hopefully she will post again soon.

No problem @VM2026 .

Yeah..Emily does post on occasion. People post/comment on various Community Hub pages when they have an opportunity, or see something they’ve also had experience/issue with in hopes of helping others.

I have installed it but never set it up or used it at the moment.  That is on my todo list for this year to get accomplished.

@VM2026 - you can certainly try, but what they’re gonna start with is the VRO Gude. If you’re mostly ok with that doc, but then have implementation-specific questions based on your implementation requirements...they should then be able to direct you how best you need/want to go.
