Inline Entropy Malware Scan Update!

And a good day to you, Community!If you read my post on Inline Entropy Scans, then you’re aware of a couple Forum posts I shared at the end of it from which I read through to get some updates on Veeam’s Malware Detection. If you want to check out my post, you can click on it below:One of the Forum posts I shared, in particular, was very beneficial as it was packed with many great ideas for feature requests, and ones which the Veeam PMs seem to agree would be beneficial feature-adds, as well as what others’ experiences have been like using Veeam Malware Detection. Agenda Ransomware Targets ESXi Hosts

Hey Community -Sorry to be the bearer of unpleasant security news as of late, but better to be proactive rather than reactive, as they say, right? 🤷🏻‍♂️It appears the Agenda Ransomware group, which was first detected in 2022, has been ramping up infiltrations recently. It’s ransomware, Agenda (aka Qilin and Water Galura), infected the likes of healthcare, manufacturing, and educational entities 2years ago, but have since rewrote their ransomware to now target OS’s, and specifically geared towards the VMware hypervisor.This new variant was detected by TrendMicro , which they say “comes with a variety of new functionalities and stealth mechanisms, & sets its sights squarely on VMware vCenter and ESXi servers.”You can read more about this ransomware variant in the article below, as well as the TM link above:https://www.darkreading.com/cloud-security/agenda-ransomware-vmware-esxi-serversI’m not aware of any messaging by VMware as of yet about a potential patch/fix for this threat. Disaster Recovery (DR) Plan - Top Items to Consider When Creating Your Own

Recently, I had to create a Disaster Recovery (DR) Plan for my organization. It’s actually quite surprising none had ever been created. Part of that is on me since I’ve been here long enough to have done so, and am responsible for most of the systems we would need to recover in the event of a disaster. But let’s be honest, creating DR Plans isn’t one of those “exotic” tasks a Systems Architect likes to do. Working with and playing with the tech we manage is what we get excited about! Regardless, it still *needs* to be done. One may ask why does creating a DR Plan need to be done? It may seem obvious to most, but some it may not. I thought I’d answer that question here, as well as provide a “skeleton” list of items to consider when building out your own DR Plan.First, having a DR Plan brings a sense of “calm” for the IT staff. In the event of a disaster of any sort - site outage; mal-intent via ransomware, disgruntled employee, or major hardware outage; etc - chaos can surely take over.

Cue Superman standing on a hill with hands on his hips, wind blowing through his hair, and cape flapping in the wind 🦸🏻😂  Ok, not really...hahaThe truth is, “sysadmin superhero-like” tactics would not have been needed if I had been a bit more meticulous in my storage configuration tasks.Veeam FlexibilityOne of the many benefits of using Veeam Backup & Replication is its flexibiltiy in how you deploy it. Personally, I use the “Advanced” deployment method, creating separate servers for Veeam and my ancillary components, Proxy and Repository. But, to save on hardware and software (OS) costs, Veeam allows you to combine the Proxy and Repository roles. I use physical hardware for these components. As such, I wanted to push my physical compute (CPU/Memory) and network (10Gb nics) resources to the limit on my hardware, so I combined them on 1 server. Updated v12 VMCE Practice Questions Coming!

Hi Community -When Veeam Community members inquire how to study for the VMCE, a lot of us who have taken and passed the exam share our thoughts. Regardless of what we suggest, most of us at least concur on one thing → to look over @haslund ‘s Practice Test questions. They give you an idea on how to go about thinking through questions you may see on the VMCE exam.Though I still recommend doing this, you need to keep in mind the questions Rasmus created are now 3+ years old, and cover I believe Veeam v11. Some of the answers may now not be accurate. Understanding this, I thought it best for me to begin posting some more updated Veeam v12 questions here in the VMCE Study Hall. I will try to make them “exam-like”, but 1. they obviously won’t be exact questions from the exam (or, if they are, it wouldn’t be intentional since I can hardly remember things from 3 days ago, much less 6 mos ago when I took the exam 🙂 ); and 2. some will have screenshots since some questions on the exam have the

VMware KBs Issues Resolved

I’m sure you all are aware VMware had an issue with v8U2 to where if you hot resized your VM virtual disks, CBT would lose change data, causing Veeam (or, any solution) backup issues. You can reference a couple VMware KBs here and here. There was a great deal of “buzz” on this in a post on the Veeam Forums.VMware released a patch to vCenter Server a couple weeks ago (v8U2b), but keep in mind...updating vCenter doesn’t resolve the issue, as the problem is with ESXi Hosts...not vCenter. I hadn’t heard/seen anything up until recently that VMware also released a patch for ESXi which now should resolve the CBT issue. Personally, I’m going to wait before I update my vSphere Hosts. I always give patch updates a couple mos or so to make sure there are no further bugs in them...unless of course the update is a critical security one.Anyway...I just wanted to make folks aware, if you weren’t already. If this was already posted somewhere..I didn’t see it, so apologies if so.

VRO Vulnerability ( CVE-2024-22021 |  CVE-2024-22022)
