VeeamON 2024 - Use Code "COMMUNITY10" for 10% Off!
A Veeam storage plugin needs to control your storage device in a way. Therefore you need a user account inside your storage system. The same of course is true for the DataCore plugin. From a security standpoint one always wants to have only the least amount of permissions to be allowed to the user. Avoid using a global admin here to minimize your attack surface! Here I will describe how to achieve that with the Veeam storage plugin for DataCore:First create a new role inside your DataCore console. In the screenshot the permissions to attach to the role are shown:Veeam storage plugin for DataCore - Role permissionsOnce the role is setup, you can create the user inside DataCore and select the role to assign it to:Veeam storage plugin for DataCore - Create the user for Veeam accessFinally you will have to create a local user of the exact same name inside all Windows servers involved in your DataCore cluster. Usually one has two nodes in a mirrored cluster. As the nodes are not supposed to b
I just updated my deep dive series on the plugin. The most important new feature is the support for DataCore's CDP. This allows to lower your RPO for your full stack to a few seconds with just a few clicks.Find more details here: https://www.elasticsky.de/en/2022/02/veeam-storage-plugin-for-datacore-v1-2-0-improvements/
The VMCA2022 exam is officially available since August 2nd 2021. So time to refresh my good old VMCAv1 certification as of 2016 which I did today. In the following I will give you an overview of what to expect and how to prepare.I registered with PearsonVUE through the VMCE certification website. Make sure to read the VMCA 2022 Exam Specification Guide provided there. There were significant changes to the requirements for the VMCA exam. It is not just the new version of the VMCAv1 exam. You will be entitled to sit the exam if you either:attend the Veeam Backup & Replication v11: Architecture and Design training course through a Veeam Authorized Educational Center (VMAEC) attended the “old” Veeam Certified Architect v1 course without sitting the exam within the last 12 months hold the Veeam Certified Architect v1 certification alreadySo there’s no need to be VMCE certified any more which is a major change in comparison to VMCAv1. I’ll come back to that point in my preparation hints
Log-shipping with VBR involves your SQL or Oracle server (VM or agent), optionally a log-shipping server and of course a repo to store the VLBs.With Hyper-V underneath one might even log-ship through the hypervisor by using PowerShell direct. This is nice, as it allows to isolate your DB workloads from the backup network and still leverage log-shipping.During the process Veeam creates temp files of the logs to be shipped first on the DB server and then the log-shipping server. Finally, after a LZ4 compression, those are driven to the repo and deleted on those temp locations. On the DB server the temp path for logs is defined in the registry and defaults to the largest disk the server has (since 9.5U4a). The path can be changed: https://www.veeam.com/kb2642On the log-shipping server the process is always using the %TEMP% path to store the data.Problem is, VBR does not seem to check both pathes before it copies the raw transaction logs during each cycle. So, a large transaction log to be
Beeing a Veeam Architect as well as DataCore DCIE at the same time I was always pushing for this plugin. After it finally happened, I took the time to write a deep dive blogpost covering all aspects:Technical background, prerequisites BfSS jobs, howto and caveats Snapshot only jobs “Instant-Sandboxing” from storage snapshots Off-label-usage with unique functionality of DataCore: Using DataCore CDP rollbacks together with the plugin to recover without having had a snapshot in the first place… (cool stuff!)Find the article in English here:https://www.elasticsky.de/en/2020/06/veeam-storage-plugin-for-datacore-deepdive/Might come in handy if you want to combine those great products. Comments or complements welcome! Regards,Michael
As some of you might already know, with V11 the creation process of GFS points within backup copy jobs will be completely renewed. As I understood it, the new method will be exactily the same then, as it is already for primary backups. So instead of forever forward merging and meanwhile somehow dropping a GFS point, we will see a forward chain with synthetic fulls. The latter will then be flagged with the GFS flags. This will in my opinion be remarkable for two reasons:We’ve seen problems with GFS backup copy jobs not adhering to the SOBR placement policy. During one support case I was driving we narrowed it down to the legacy way GFS points are generated in these jobs. SOBR placement policy disregarded for GFS - Veeam R&D Forums. So this might be solved then, which is great news. On the other hand this is also good news for the usage of dedupe appliances. Especially the ones with a landing zone like ExaGrid. Those currently suffer from the merging processes occuring in backup copies
This issue I’ve seen with larger SOBRs having many ReFS extents. Having a backup-copy job (pruning) with GFS there were sudden unintended switches of backup chains to other extents. Thus loosing all space efficiency for the GFS points. We used scripts here to detect chains spanning more than a single extent. It turned out to be a bug solved in V10 paired with a very conservative process in VBR to detect extents near space exhaustion. There is some estimation here due not being able to estimate the space savings due to block recloning. This could be tweaked with two regkeys:Pfad: HKLM\Software\Veeam\Veeam Backup and ReplicationName: SOBRSyntheticFullCompressRate Value: 35, DWORDDescription: override the estimated space VM would take on SOBR in a full backup. % of previous full backup size. Name: SobrForceExtentSpaceUpdateValue: 1, DWORDDescription: enables advanced SOBR extents free space update logic. With this set to 1 (enabled) service updates cached extent free space every time tas
