Virtual Machine Migration Approach

Is it possible to take an outage on each VM?  Do you have from FC HBA’s that can be installed on the new hosts?  If so, I’d also be looking at connecting the new HCI platform to the old shared storage.  Mount up the datastores.  On the old hosts, shutdown the VM’s, note the VM location and unregister the VM.  On the new hosts/HCI, browse to the storage, register the VM’s and storage vMotion.  Power-on can happen before or after the storage vMotion depending on downtime requirements. I’d suggest not upgrading the virtual hardware until things are up and running and confirmed working so that if you have to roll back, you can easily enough.  Option 2 would be a cross-vcenter vMotion, but I’m not sure that you can do that between 5.x and 7.  You can upgrade 5.x to 6 to whatever.  Once you get to 6.5 I think - maybe 6.7 (check the matrix posted above) and then you could manage the old hosts in the 7.x vCenter.  Of course, as others mentioned here and since this is a Veeam forum, setting up

Question about agent based backups

ISCSI is absolutely backed up by the agent.  I had to do this for a VM with RDM drives as RDM’s cannot be snapped and backed up at the VM level.  I setup VM backup for the VM as a whole, and then used the agent to backup the RDM/ISCSI drives to the Veeam repo.

Monthly License Review - no option to submit

Correct you don’t need to do anything but send that report to your 3rd party provider. Veeam bills them for usage and they bill you. This is normally when the 3rd party provides support or manages the infrastructure in some way that this is used.  I’m confused why he would get anything that needs to be sent to his provider.  Unless it’s just the PDF report sent from the service provider console, but he shouldn’t have to do anything with that, correct?

Where exactly are you seeing this report?  Is it a PDF in your email on or on a console or something?  If it’s just a report that’s email, then more than likely it’s being sent to you automatically out of your providers console.  Your provider should be auditing the license/point count and managing the backups.Also, your service provider should be the primary manger of your Veeam deployment and not you.  You message didn’t really indicate if you’re manging the backups or not, but it kinda sounds like you might be.  The service provider/rental model requires that the service provider is the primary user/manager of your backups.  If you are performing the backup tasks, then you should be utilizing subscription licensing and not rental through a provider.If you’re Veeam deployment is tied to your providers service provider console for management (if you’re not sure, check the Backup Infrastructure tab in your VBR Console under “Service Providers” and you’ll likely see a connection from yo

Customer Success Story - Veeam Disaster Recovery Orchestrator

I haven’t had any time to setup VDRO in the lab though I started to.  I have high hopes.  SRM is a great product, but doesn’t tick all the boxes live VDRO with the exception of working with storage-based replication.  SRM still has better support with vendor supplied SRA’s to support array-based replication on more storage arrays, but I expect that will improve with time and I honestly have only run into one client so far that was using storage replication on their compellent arrays.

The vCenter migration tool is the way.  It works great though a bit clunky.  And again, unsupported.

Using an Asustor NAS? Shut it down immediately!

The amount of times a Dell based Windows Storage Server has been cheaper than a “proper” business grade Synology is surprising! True story.  We tend to do R540’s if we need a few drive bays, or R440’s or even R340’s if we only need a couple and not much compute. If we need a LOT of drive bays, we do a T640 in either a rack or tower config with 18 bays.  In really small deployments like a ROBO a T40 or T140 fit the bill.  And the pricing over a NAS with hard drives, no refresh lifecycle, no enterprise support…...the Dell should win out every time.

Agree, the NAS boxes are great for private use. I have a QNAP box at home which is running for 11 years without problems now. But in professional environments with higher requirements they are a horror... I recycled my NAS a few years ago as it didn’t support any SMB newer than v1! 🤣 I have an old Intel NAS that won’t do NFS v3, and the SMB/CIFS is really slow.  But I also have a DS218+ that works great using NFS.  I just got another, so I might do some shared storage on iSCSI, but debating since it’s only a 2-bay unit.

Had one client with an AsuSTOR.  Thing decided to stop working one day…..still need to try and get the data off of the disks but I need to be able to rebuild the 8 SATA drive array.  I’ll stick with Synology, or better yet, purpose-built servers instead of a NAS.

Mhh, I don’t think this will work with the textfile. There are some data structures not saved with this command. Piping to the Copy-VBRJob will probably work, because you have all the information. But in the textfile is a whole bunch of information missing… For example... AutoScheduleOptions          : Veeam.Backup.Model.CAutoScheduleOptions And under this is a deeper structure… and so on. PerformActiveFullBackup       : False ActiveFullBackupKind          : Daily ActiveFullBackupDays          : {Saturday} ActiveFullBackupMonthlyOption : Veeam.Backup.Model.CDomFullBackupMonthlyScheduleOptions PerformTransformToSyntethic   : True TransformToSyntethicDays      : {Saturday}  I tried exporting to a CSV but got some really weird results.  I’ve never tried it before, but wonder if it could be exported to XML.

After a bit more research, you can do a Get-VBRJob as I listed above, and you can pipe the output into a new job using the Copy-VBRJob cmdlet, but I haven’t tried it from a text file.  With that said, the Copy-VBRJob cmdlet is only available on Enterprise Edition (job cloning) so the server I’m on isn’t enterprise so I didn’t test it there.  I did find that the Get-VBRJob can also get multiple jobs using the below, or leaving the name blank should grab all jobs. Get-VBRJob -Name "DHCP Replica Job", "DHCP Backup Job" | Copy-VBRJob The untested Copy-VBRJob command.  Again, not sure that it will accept the imported text file.$jobsettings = Get-Content C:\Users\Administrator\Desktop\VM.txt$jobsettings | Copy-VBRJob

I haven’t done this, but I believe you can do it by using the PowerShell on the VBR server.  Play around with the commands….I suspect that the Get-VBRJob will allow you to select specific jobs and then export them as well.   Get-VBRJob | Export-VBRJob https://forums.veeam.com/powershell-f26/export-job-configuration-t5849.html   Nice powershell, but if this don’t work I think the fastest way is via configuration backup.  Pretty sure importing the config will overwrite the existing config, and it sounds like OP is wanting to merge jobs from multiple backups servers to a single server.  Am I wrong that it will overwrite the existing config by importing?  I’ve only performed config imports for recoveries and migrations/upgrades.

Veeam-data domain

It sounds like the DD could lock the files and prevent deletion but that would be outisde the scope of Veeam’s native capabilities.  That said, I’d certainly run a test…...run a backup, get some files on there, and then try and delete them.  Personally, I like to test and see for myself…..seeing is believing.

Fun Friday: Will you be moving to VMware vSphere 7.x now?

I’ve been reluctant to upgrade to 7 although I do have a couple clients out there with it.  I will be deploying 7 on a new cluster in two days, but this is pre-U3c, so while I like to delay my updates a little bit, in this case, I’ll likely updated to 3c before putting these machines into production. Thanks for sharing, okay follow up question:   Since vCenter 7.0 U3c is also available with the Log4j fixes, who’s ready to move to that?  We plan on rolling that out basically as soon as possible but I haven’t reviewed the fixes yet.

Fun Friday: What do you use to lab/test?

At the office, I have 6 PowerEdge R610’s running ESXI 6.7 (well, 5, one died) connected to an Equallogic PS6000 array for the compute environment.  Three more R610’s are on the shelf to be added as well as a PS6210E.  Using two Dell PowerConnect 6448 switches in a stack with a Cisco ASA5505.  Have VBR and VDRO (in process) setup on Server 2016 on a HP Z420 running ESXI with a hardware RAID controller and a couple of 4TB and 6TB drives in it for backups.  I’ll likely change over to utilize a Synology RackStation later on for the Veeam repositories.  I’m working on getting ahold of a couple PowerEdge R620’s as well as some R710’s or R720’s.At home, I have a PowerEdge R610 (to be replaced by a R520) running ESXI 6.7 as well.  Have an Extreme Networks Summit 48-port POE Switch and Ubiquiti Unified Security Gateway Pro for a firewall.  VBR 11 and VBO 5 are running on two Server 2016 VM’s and are backing using a Synology DS218+ for the repositories.
