Hello, I currently have an R740 with a NetApp E Series directly attached and am looking to use it as a hardened repo (rocky os). I am concerned that the 740 is near end of life, so wondering how difficult and what would the steps be if I was to replace the server with a new one in a year or two down the line?

Of course, you don’t have to replace the servers and the E-Series. You can simply replace the Veeam Backup Repository Server and then map the E-Series LUNs to the new server. Then replace or update the server object in Veeam (via PowerShell) and perform a rescan of the repository.

+12You have two options on this kind of situation.
Option A
You only need to deploy the new repo and move your backups through old repo no new one.

Option B
You can create a SOBR and use the new repo as a member of the performance tier.
After that you only need evacuate the old one.

+13The option I’d go for is place they new repo next to the old repo and either create a new copy job or disable the old one and transfer the job to the new repo.
Immutability means that data cannot be deleted so “moving” data - that would include deleting it from the old repo - is difficult.

So essentially just the server cannot be replaced, it will require a whole new stack (server+netapp) and then copy the backups images from old to new.

We have spun new Linux servers and moved XFS volumes in the past but the above methods mentioned above are the tried and true way to go.

+10As long as you know how to mount/attach the storage you are fine. Same for windows. you can replace a repository and reattach the volumes. This does get scary when you have 100’s of TB’s of production Data.
Many Veeam customers use local disks so SOBR, or even with SAN work well. I recommend if you use SAN, to buy new hardware at the same time, so the servers/storage can be on the same evergreen plan and you are not replacing one without the other.
It’s much more simple, and safer.
SOBR is great. add a new repository, and age out or drain the old one. If it is immutable keep this in mind.
