Question

one VUL license to use on two different VBR servers

Userlevel 4

Hi,

is it possible to use the same VUL license on two different standalone VBR servers ?

the VBR in the main site doing the backup to disk and then backup copy and replicate only one VM
to the VBR server in the DR site to his local repository.
the license is for 5 VM bundle and in practice only one VM is backup and then copy and replicate to DR.

Thanks

Are you doing the backup & backup copy on your main site VBR server? Your 2nd VBR server doesn't need a license to receive the backup or backup copy data. If you need to use your DR side server in the event your main site server is down, you could use the license then, but I'd say you still don't need to because if memory serves the Community Edition of VBR (which is VBR running with no license) has a 10 VUL limit.

yes, the main site is doing the back, copy and replicate to the DR VBR

the DR VBR just receiving the backup copy and the replicate VM.

Yep, then you should be fine. No need to have a license on the DR server. Licenses are only for backing up data; not for restores, as noted in the blue not section here.

so we only need to install the community edition on the DR VBR

we need also a proxy in the DR to receive the replica ?

Do you have a VBR server on your DR side? If so, to have Community Edition, just don’t install a license. That makes VBR a Community Edition.

Yes, to help with Replication speed across your WAN, you should have a Backup Proxy on both your source (main site) and target (DR site). I recommend reading up on Replication from the User Guide here.

we have a VBR on the DR side he will be community edition

the question is if VBR community can also be used as a proxy server ?

By default, when you install VBR, the Proxy & Repository roles get installed as well. You can use VBR as your Proxy if you want.

Best practice is to just run your VBR server at the DR site to backup your main site.  If you want to manage more than one VBR server it’s a good opportunity to install Enterprise Manager.

Using the same license on multiple servers is not allowed.

Proxies and repositories at each site won’t take up a license. Export your Veeam config backups and if you ever need to restore at either site, just stack up a new server and import the config.  You don’t need to run 2 VBR servers in the environment.

Using the same license on multiple servers is not allowed.

@Scott

This is allowed, but all backup server must be managed by a single Enterprise Manager. The Enterprise Manager takes care of license management in such a scenario.

Veeam Licensing Policy → 1.11 Veeam License Keys, 1.13 Source Infrastructure

Customers can use copies of the Software and one License Key to manage same or multiple Source Infrastructures. In this scenario, Customers are required to implement centralized license management (for example, Veeam Enterprise Manager) to control total license consumption and compliance with the licensing terms.

OP was using 2 separate Veeam servers in different environments.

My second sentance in my comment was “  If you want to manage more than one VBR server it’s a good opportunity to install Enterprise Manager”.

Using Enterprise manager is not the  same as Installing the license on 2 servers. You still install the license one time on Enterprise manager which is managing both servers.

We both are saying the same thing sort of. But I think what OP was asking, is could he take the same license, and install it in 2 places not using Enterprise Manager.
