Good afternoon, all!

My customer is at the very front edge of a complete virtualization refresh - hardware, software, virtualization platform, the whole picture.

We’re currently using Veeam B&R and VeeamONE to support our VMware stack, with an onsite performance layer and a cloud storage tier for long-term archiving.

If we moved to Hyper-V or Nutanix, would we be able to retain our VMware-based backups for file and data recovery or would we need to repatriate and convert?

Thanks!

Yes, you’d be able to keep the old backups and restore them to the new hypervisor platform. In fact, using Veeam to restore those backups onto the new platform is an excellent method to perform the migration.

New backups wouldn’t continue on the existing backup chain though, so be prepared to do a new active full backup of all the migrated data.

I’d use Veeam to migrate TO the new platform, however, you won’t be forced to delete anything, It will be a new chain and I’d recommend a new job so you can sort them differently when you decide it’s time to remove the old data.

Agreed with both comments above. Veeam can be used with an instant recovery to perform those migrations and you will also be able to “browse” your old backups for specific restores (or instant recoveries just as the migration for whole VMs).

Please keep in mind that for performing AHV backups with Veeam you can now only use the VUL (Veeam Universal License) and not the socket based license model and you’ll need to deploy Nutanix AHV Proxies in order to perform backups.

There currently are a few limitations with Veeam and AHV, such as the limitation of SureBackup and AHV backups. Currently you can only run “SureBackup Light” which does not cover the possibility of using Proxy Appliances right now.
