Hi Community,

Does anyone know the best way to backup the Nutanix Prism Centarl VM?

Thank you!

Did you check the help for the Nutanix plug-in which mentions Prism Central?

https://helpcenter.veeam.com/docs/vbahv/userguide/infrastructure_prism_central.html?ver=7

Hi @AndrePulia great question! Prism Central is a critical VM, and while Veeam Backup for Nutanix AHV supports backing up AHV VMs, Prism Central itself is not officially supported for backup due to its sensitivity and potential impact on cluster operations.

However, here are a few safe options:

  1. Use Nutanix native snapshots for Prism Central and replicate them to another cluster.
  2. Export the VM manually using Nutanix tools for offline backup.
  3. If you still want to try Veeam, make sure to exclude Prism Central from automated jobs and test restores in a lab before applying in production.

Always consult Nutanix and Veeam support before backing up system-critical VMs like Prism Central.

@Chris.Childerhose that doc is most for integrate Nutanix environment and Veeam.

Hi @waqasali the PC VM now has it own backup method, I didn’t find any information regarding take backup from it using Veeam, this week I’m delivering a Nutanix class and one of my students asked me how to protect it using Veeam.

So, he needs to continue using the PCBR.
Thank you anyway

Hi @AndrePulia Thanks for the heads-up! You are right currently, Veeam doesn’t support direct backup of Nutanix Prism Central (PC VM). In my experience, the best approach is to continue using PC Backup & Recovery (PCBR) for that specific workload.

Veeam focuses more on protecting Nutanix AHV VMs via the Veeam Backup for Nutanix AHV proxy, but Prism Central itself falls outside that scope for now.

Thank you  @waqasali yes, that’s right.

This seems to align with the best practice of not backing up VMWare vCenter Server Appliance, as Prism Central essentially performs the same functions.

@Tommy O'Shea Exactly Tommy. thank you!

Here you can see a best practice backup Nutanix document too.

@wolff.mateus , thank you !!!! :-)
