Hi Everyone, I have just moved over to Kasten on loan from Veeam to really focus on the Technical Community and Content. I thought I would ask the Veeam community about your experiences so far into the learning journey of Kubernetes and Cloud Native technologies. 

I have been on this learning curve for the past 2 years and there is still quite a bit to tackle and as always in technology you can go as far and as wide on all areas of learning. I have started to document this for the blog my building out an environment in my home lab. 

I want to see how you are all navigating this? Any training methods you have found? 

Are your companies starting to or into the Kubernetes journey? 

and here is another one, how long before we see this trend become our normal, most likely alongside virtualisation which we all know and love today. 

Finally I would love to hear from you if you have Kubernetes or Kasten blog content because we want to share this as wide as possible.

Speaking honestly, I’m yet to start the Kubernetes journey, but I was reading your posts earlier today with interest, I don’t want to miss the party with Kubernetes, getting my lab upgraded next weekend and going to start taking a peek at what’s new.

Now Veeam have acquired Kasten it’s removing a barrier for entry, whilst I appreciate it won’t be overnight but I feel more comfortable picking up Kubernetes now that I don’t also need to learn a new backup product and architecture as well. (Again, it won’t be an overnight transition but I trust Veeam to help steer the product in the right direction for usability and familiarity that we’ve been spoiled with for Azure/AWS etc)

Absolutely, I think many people see the learning curve being just too steep and it really is not. I am going to document as well to try and help with all of us Infrastructure types get onto it and navigating this new world. 

Make sure you document your learnings and resources, and no question is not welcome here. 

I am at the very beginning of the container and Kubernetes story. I am very curous about the new possibilities Kasten will provide to the VEEAM products…

The first clients have interest in these technologies so I am on the way to learn and  play around with them.

Openshift certified since 2018 here! Waiting eternally Kasten should be prioritize on the intern roadmap and share the review to the community.

I deployed a Docker Swarm cluster for a distributed setup of Minio about a year and a half ago. At the time Kubernetes was too steep of mountain to climb up for that task. Since then I have been building step by step. This past summer was a highlight when I passed the CKA 3 hour practical exam. Now they have reduced it to 2 hours but it was a tough cookie to crack and imagine it still is. At this point I am studying for the new CKS (Kubernetes Security Specialist) Certification. Kubernetes I don’t find simple but I find it a lot of fun. Reminds me of the days when trying to get my dial up modem to work with linux and playing with ATP commands and dial up scripts, complicated but when it finally works you find yourself jumping around gleefully. You just don’t get the same satisfaction from plug and play 🙂 .

My problem with Kubernetes is, I don't have a use-case for it. I dont know where to start and what to do with it; compared to every other technology which I've learned so far.

I've played a bit with docker an ran Nextcloud or MinIO, but that's it so far...

I started a few months ago. It’s been a ton of fun! Great use case for the #HomeLab. Biggest hurdle to getting started was just figuring out how to get a dependable lab up and running. I tried a lot of different methods, each with merits but so far have settled on Kubeadm. Wrote up a step-by-step on my blog back in December. 

 

Also, for training, I’ve been super impressed with Mumshad Mannambeth’s courses on Udemy. They come with free hands-on-labs which is also super helpful. He has both an Absolute Beginners course and a CKA course.

Yes can only agree that his courses are brilliant along with Nigel Poulton on Pluralsight both covering the same topics with different approaches.

This is absolutely fine as well. If you have already done some work with docker though you are a way down that line already so you will at least understand the microservices concept. I am seeing more and more customers speak about Kubernetes and containers in general, people are thinking about it not always doing it just yet.

Ha, always happy to share this with the community folks when everyone has the interest and requirement or just interest. In the meantime if this is pressing then your local SE could likely make this happen also. But fully expect a lot more content coming around Kubernetes and Kasten.

Yes! Reading Nigel’s book now. Was lucky enough to get the Klingon Edition with red cover.

And no, I’m not fluent… the content is still in English. ;)

 

I don’t have that one I got the quick start one delivered today actually. I was recommended to it for a desk reference. 

I could use a K8S desk reference… “add to cart!”
