I was looking for an alternative to Macrium Reflect for my home PC backup after I learned that their free version was no longer supported, and quite a few people recommended Veeam, so here I am having downloaded the free community version, but now that I’ve installed it, I think I’m in way over my head lol

I am not a professional and have no experience or education in IT, but I have been able to follow instructions well enough to troubleshoot and maintain my own machine in most cases. All I want is to set up a straightforward and regular (as in repeating regularly) backup for my home pc on a local external drive, no servers, no ports, not on any cloud, but I can’t even get past the login screen.

Having read this page in the help center it seems like I’ve either missed a few steps (I have no server to provide credentials for) or I no longer have the info it needs (if the credentials it wants are the ones I used to download the program, I don’t have them since I used throwaway email and password for that not expecting I would need them again), either way, I’m stuck before I’ve even started, and honestly at this point I’m wondering if this is even the solution for me or if it’s massive overkill and I should be looking at other options instead of trying to set this up.

Any advice is appreciated!

You’ve likely downloaded Veeam Data Platform, otherwise known as Veeam Backup & Replication. This is for centralized backups of servers, workstations, etc.

What you’re looking for is Veeam Agent for Windows (Assuming you’re using Windows, not a a Mac).

Hi @anon -

As Tommy shared, you probably downloaded what we call “VBR” Community Edition (free), which indeed is seemingly overkill for your needs. Download what Tommy provided, then use the User Guide for that product:
https://helpcenter.veeam.com/docs/agentforwindows/userguide/overview.html?ver=60

Though there’s quite a bit of info for it, it’s actually fairly easy to use. And, with the free version, a lot of features the Guide talks about, you won’t have anyway. Go through the Install section (nothing Advanced is needed); then the Performing a Backup section. I’d also review the Restore section to prepare you in case you do need to do a restore at some point (files or otherwise).

Let us know if you have further questions.

Best.

Thank you both for the quick response, you’re spot on, I have clearly downloaded the wrong thing and feel a little silly now lol

Thank you so much for the links! I will go ahead and download the correct files now and report back once I've had a chance to check it out (not today, I’ve had enough for today 😂)

Thanks again!

Awesome! No problem at all. Let us know if you have further questions.
