Data Compression (File-level backup)

Userlevel 2

I’ve used Veeam Backup & Replication V10 solutino; have File-level-backup jobs, Synthetic full backup, local repo, and use Optimal Data Compression.

My issue is, High and Extreme Data Compression does not compress The Backup.

my backups took massive sotrage, why is the compression not working?

Hi @Mohamed Eleraqy

Are you talking about Agents?

They are not really storage effective with file level backups. Each time you change a single file, the entire file will be needed to be backed up again.

It‘s better to use volume level backup.

I had used volume-level backup before, it’s give me nothing to backup Error.

when I contacted the Support Team they advised me to use File-level backup.

File Level Backup has it‘s limitations and other requirements.
What was the issue with volume-level Backups?

That‘s a Strange error.

What was the choosen source type?

Entire computer? Or a single volume?

@Mildur  Single volume

And this volume was a local disk in your machine?

@Mildur

Okay, let me figure it out for you.
I have Two NAS Storage First one is connected to Server-One, and the other one is connected to Veeam-Server, both of them are connected by Microsoft ISCSI, “It’s appeared like a local disk.”

So on the Veeam-server, I set up the repo on the NAS Storage.

and both of The Servers are VM.

Thanks for outlining your configuration.

A connected iscsi is totally possible to backup with the veeam Agent. It‘s the only way to backup the iscsi volume.

For doing volume backup, you need to configure the drive letter in the backup job on the veeam-server. This needs to be done in this step:

If the drive letter in the backup job matches with the one of the iscsi volume in the Server-One, then something is definitely not right.

For a test, you could start a Entire Computer Backup. If the iscsi volume is included in the backup, then there is no reason why it is not working with Volume level Backup.

I would ask veeam support to have a deeper look, especially if you have an active maintenance contract. I don‘t like agent file level backups, because they have not a great performance and they require most of the time more space than a block level backup.

One idea comes to me are too many exclusions.

Userlevel 2

@Rick Vanover if you mean that I exclude other paths from the Job, it’s not.
