Question

Backup of Linux VM failing

I’ve installed Veeam Backup & Recovery 12 on a Windows 11 device (it used to have Veeam installed and was working fine but accidentally got removed, we’re not sure what version).

It was used to backup a Esxi Linux VM

I’ve setup a computer and a VM backup job but neither complete with a message ‘failed to perform backup policy operation.

The only messages I see in the login relates to Disposed or retry are not supported.

Some fixes relate to restating the veeam backup service...but i see no backup service and even when i run the MSI, there are no errors after installing as account prompted by default.

Any suggestions?

Thanks

It is recommended to install Veeam on a Windows server not a client OS but it does work.  Version 13 is also the newest release as well.

Check the logs here - C:\ProgramData\Veeam\Backup for issues otherwise this is a good problem for a support case.  Keep in mind the community is not technical support just enthusiasts helping each other.

Yep, appreciate the Server side but it wasn’t an option. As mentioned, it was installed on this VM but removed in error. Version 13 was tried but it reported the VM didn’t support it, hence we tried the next available version, 12.

The logs are only reporting what I’ve mentioned, although probably should have mentioned that.

Appreciate any assistance but yes, maybe a support case is required.

Yeah things of this sort are better with support as it will take too long to diagnose it here unfortunately.  Best of luck.

Hi @sparkymarcopolo - welcome to the Community!

By chance, are you attempting to do guest processing in your backup job? Veeam supports backing up basically any VM supported by VMware, but if you are using Guest Processing, your Linux platform must be a certain version based off the User Guide System Requirements:
https://helpcenter.veeam.com/archive/backup/120/vsphere/platform_support.html#vmware-vsphere-vms

Your backup service is called Veeam Backup Service specifically. So, if you did look for that and still didn’t find it then the software didn’t fully install properly. You can attempt to install the Veeam Backup Service with the .msi in the installation directory:
C:\Program Files\Veeam\Backup and Replication\Backup\Packages. The package is called the VeeamTransport.msi. If those couple items don’t work, as Chris shared...open a case with Veeam Support. Let us know how it goes.

Best.
