Question

Backing up Windows 2022 Server Standard with Hyper-V VMs on Veeam 11

Forum|alt.badge.img+1

My home lab:

Veeam 11 server is on Windows 10.  I have 6 Ubuntu VMs on my HP Z840 workstation with Windows 2022 Standard Hyper-V.    How do I backup each VM separate so I can recover them.   Both are in a workgroup.

Veeam won’t recognize the 2022 Standard as a Hyper-V server.   Veeam 11 can see it as a 2022 Standard Server.   Do I need to install a Hyper-V agent or Windows Server agent on this box?

Hi @SCSIraidGURU -

HV on Windows 2022 Std is supported as per the VBR v11 User Guide
https://helpcenter.veeam.com/archive/backup/110/hyperv/platform_support.html

….as long as you are running VBR v11a, not just v11 (see the “1” note at the end of the “Virtual Infrastructure” box). If you are not able to update to v11a (I’m not sure what the exact build number that would be as it’s pretty old..as in about 5yrs old I believe), you could upgrade to v12.3
https://helpcenter.veeam.com/archive/backup/120/hyperv/upgrade_vbr_byb.html
https://helpcenter.veeam.com/archive/backup/120/hyperv/upgrade_vbr.html

If you’re uneasy about doing that...then yes, you should be ok to use VAW and VAL to do your backups.
VAW: https://helpcenter.veeam.com/docs/agentforwindows/userguide/overview.html?ver=13
VAL: https://helpcenter.veeam.com/docs/agentforlinux/userguide/overview.html?ver=13

Nice to see you split this issue off to a new thread. Not sure how you will get v12 but hopefully you can at some point.  I am still searching for links and will post them if I find some.

To download VBR v12.3, Veeam has previous version downloads on their site in a “Previous Versions” tab:

https://www.veeam.com/products/downloads/latest-version.html?ad=downloads&tab=previous

But if he is not on a supported v11 to go to that version it won't work.

I did check.  I am on Veeam 11A.   Windows 2022 Server has the backup agent installed.  Still can’t backup the server.

It is best to separate questions….

I am on Veeam 11A.   I need to go to 12 GA and then the latest 12.   I can’t get Veeam server to authicate my email address.  It won’t send me an email.   Veeam support will only answer tickets.  I can’t open a ticket without getting my email fixed with the authenication email.

Are you managing the agent from VBR or pointing it to a repository within VBR?  Not sure how to help with the email and download stuff.

Then you should be able to do the upgrade. Just get the correct ISO as shown in the KB below:

Below are numbers you can attempt for phone support to try and address your email issue:

I called support in the USA.  I need a case to open a call with them.  I can finish registering my email address mike.mckenney@scsiraidguru.com to open a case or get to downloads.

You can or cannot?  I thought you could not register to get this working?  Maybe create another email address to try?

Usually, Veeam 11A installs the drivers on the new devices.  I will go into my new Windows 2022 Standand server and remove the current Veeam agent to let it install when I create the new server.   This could be part of the issue with the job failing to connect.   It could be a DCOM Windows 2022 issue with connections.

Possibly yes.  If you add the server to a Protection Group on VBR and let it push the agent, it should be good.  Hopefully, that works.

It is in my home lab behind a Fortinet 61F firewall.  I just backup because our children tend to crash their minecraft servers.  I don’t use protective groups.   Individual workstations is what I use.

I wonder if the 2022 issue is DCOM non-domain 2022 Server connectivity.

It is possible. Check the Veeam docs to see what all the pre-reqs are, etc.

I have started to do the pre reqs for Windows 2022.   DCOM has tightened.  I can RDP from veeam server to HP Z840 just fine.  Both boxes are fully patched up.   I found a registry key for DCOM I will put on tonight.

“I wonder if the 2022 issue is DCOM non-domain 2022 Server connectivity.“ ← I have seen some posts here and there on that @SCSIraidGURU . Not sure if this’ll help, but found this KB:
https://www.veeam.com/kb4376

No reg key listed, but may have something which might help.

This is my home lab.  It sits behind a Fortinet 61F Firewall.  So I don’t worry about security.   I did see an article to turn off UAC on both Veeam Server and 2022 Server.

Veeam Server : Windows 10 22H2 + Veeam 11A
HP Z840 : Windows 2022 Standard with Hyper-V
Fully patched.

workgroup not a domain
no clusters or protected groups.
Same network IP and subnet.  They are on a gigabit switch behind the Fortinet.
Windows Firewalls are off

I do get this:
1. Invalid credentials.
2. Specified host is not a Hyper-V server.

I will try these tonight:

See the list at the bottom of this article: KB5004442—Manage changes for Windows DCOM Server Security Feature Bypass (CVE-2021-26414).
The updates listed on that page may have been rolled in to future updates, check Windows DCOM Server Security Feature Bypass CVE-2021-26414 for more information.

Thank you for your help.
The rest of the backups are working fine.  I need to consolidate my tape jobs to the two remaining SAS drives after removing my SCSI tape drive.
