AHV Proxy and workers advice

Hi team

Please excuse my ignorance as I have not done this before and would like your advise.
Current VEEAM implementation has AHV proxy configured to back up the environment.
A new AHV clusters will be added. My initial uneducated thought assumed to re-use the existing proxy but I think that is actually not possible now.

It seems the proxy configuration cannot be altered so I think it leaves me with no choice to create new one. No biggie.

Also, I noticed that there is an embedded worker for the cluster configured in the proxy.
In general, Would you suggest adding more workers to the new cluster? There are 3 nodes

Cheers

I don't use Nutanix but if the workers are similar to proxies in the VMware world then to me one per node might suffice.  Some more info here - https://en.vmik.net/2024/04/vbr-ntnx-workers/

Hi @gravelrider,

Have done a lot of AHV in the past so here’s some input:

Afaik it should basically be possible to re-use existing proxies but that depends on many factors like networks, versions etc.

It’s not very complicated to deploy new proxies so don’t worry if this is what you have to do - would be the cleanest solution in many ways imo.

Here’s some general information: https://helpcenter.veeam.com/docs/vbr/userguide/nutanix_ahv.html?ver=13

Please keep in mind that with v13.0.1 (must current version) of Veeam you don’t need those AHV proxies anymore - they are fully integrated into VBR so I’d strongly recommend using that version.

In case you stay with the versions before please note the following (this is from my memory since I didn’t dig too deep for these archived v12 articles in the Veeam helpcenter):

  • 1 Proxy has 1 worker “integrated”
  • 1 worker per cluster

In case you have multiple clusters you don’t need multiple AHV proxies but you can simply deploy additional workers, that’s way more effective.

With you 3 nodes you are totally good to go with 1 AHV proxy with that 1 integrated worker. Again, please consider upgrading to the newest version to avoid all that overhead.

Hope that helps!

Lukas

If Workers are deployed like other solutions (Veeam Plugins)..you are correct @gravelrider ...you can’t use an existing VM. You deploy Workers through the VBR Console and Veeam auto-creates them. I tested this out with other Plugins and there is no option to use an existing VM.

See:

https://helpcenter.veeam.com/docs/vbahv/userguide/workers_add_vm.html?ver=9

You may be using something different? At the very least you can reach out to Veeam Support and see if there is a way to do this.

Hope that helps..

Best.
