Hello! I did some recent research and ended up turning it into a short article where I bring some important insights into data protection for the cloud and from the cloud.

💚This is my first time writing here in the group, I hope you like it. 😀

Introduction

Today, the reasons for having your backups in the cloud are obvious to all organizations. However, many organizations still do not have this level of maturity. Reactive pressures against ransomware and proactive initiatives to adopt and protect workloads hosted in the cloud have been a challenge for many customers. In this article, I will describe how Veeam Software has positioned itself with workloads running on providers such as AWS, Azure and Google Cloud.

In this article I will describe how Veeam Software has positioned itself with workloads running on providers such as AWS, Azure and Google Cloud.

Let's recap the 2024 changes in the area of data protection

1,200 business and IT leaders were surveyed about their IT and data protection strategies, including their plans for 2024 and beyond…

  • 76% Organizations recognize a protection gap;
  • 88% Use BaaS/DRaaS on at least some of your servers;
  • 76% Suffered a Ransomware attack in the last year;

In recent years, two major themes have emerged around what constitutes “modern” or “innovative” data protection, including the integration of data protection and cybersecurity tools, and the ability to provide protection across multiple cloud scenarios.

• Ability to move workloads between clouds, such as from Amazon to Azure, leveraging available credits.

• Standardization of data protection across on-premises and cloud environments, ensuring consistent policies and recovery.

• On-premises to cloud migration and disaster recovery are among the top priorities, as they are technically similar processes.

Cloud terminology

  • AWS Accounts | Microsoft Subscription | Google Cloud Projects

Logical containers (not Kubernetes) organize resources and administration in the cloud, accounts, subscriptions and projects act as security boundaries to isolate backups.

  • Regions

Physical locations where cloud providers maintain their resources.

  • IAM

Identity and Access Management (IAM) are web services that help securely grant and manage access to resources. o Immutability Immutable backups, once locked, cannot be changed, encrypted or deleted.

Examples of strategies that deliver immutability:

• Veeam Data Cloud Vault

• AWS - Object Lock

• Microsoft Azure Storage

• Wasabi Cloud Object Storage

• IBM Cloud Object Storage

Among many others…

What workloads can I protect with Veeam?

Category Service Provider
Computing EC2 Amazon AWS
Database RDS
DynamoDB Tables
FileSystem EFS File Systems
FSx File Systems
S3
EBS
Data Warehouse Redshift Clusters
Redshift (Serverless)
Configuration VPC Configurations
Private Network Deployment
AWS Organizations
Computing VMs Azure
Database SQL
Cosmos DB Accounts
FileSystem Azure File Shares
Configuration Virtual Network Configurations
Storage Managed Disks
Blob Storage
Computing Compute Engine VM Google Cloud
Database Cloud Spanner Instances
SQL
Storage Cloud Storage

Depending on which public cloud you are on, you need to size and architect different Veeam products to cover the workloads mentioned above.

Real-world use cases of Veeam

I chose some real-world cases to share in this article

  • Bidvest with AWS

Bidvest Insurance - Veeam Customer Quote

  • Corona with Azure

Corona - Veeam Customer Story

  • Carrefour with Google

Finalization

We have many options to protect different types of workloads in different sources and destinations.

It is extremely important to carry out an initial assessment so that all workloads are included within the scope of data protection and which policies should be followed.
