I am trying to create a Backup Copy job in VBR for my Veeam Backup for AWS jobs in S3 but the icon is greyed out. I have an enterprise plus license so should I not be able to do this?

Is it grayed out under the Jobs section to create a copy?

Hi @supskyrail -

As Chris suggests...you’re in the wrong area of the Veeam Console. You’re looking at the Backups section (i.e. your backup data). Each of the sections listed there are your job names and the backed up VM data each Job creates.

If you click on the Jobs section at the top, you should see Backup Copy option be available. It’s in the Jobs section you create various VB&R Jobs, not in the Backups section. You can reference the Veeam for AWS Guide if you need further details:

Hi guys, I’ve tried creating a Backup Copy job as well but the repositories that have my EC2 backups don’t show. They show in the External Repositories section.

They are probably not the type for BCJ and why they don't show

What type would it need to be? I can’t find any other way to backup my EC2 instances with Veeam Backup for AWS.

Hello,

I created a video of this, at around 12 minutes is backup copy from AWS immutable to local hardened / immutable repo. Hope it’s some use/help!

Many thanks,

Watch Ian's video it is great and will explain how.  👍

Awesome! Thanks for sharing Ian!

Hi @Ian Wright UKI, this is a great guide! After watching it I realised I don’t have the “From backups” option in my list.

Any idea’s what I’ve done wrong?

Hi @supskyrail - glad you have some value from the video!

If you want to see “from backups” my best guess without seeing your environment is, in Veeam Backup for AWS do you have Snapshots and Backups enabled?

To explain, in Veeam Backup for AWS (this is for EC2) we leverage the AWS native snapshot technology to take the initial backup. Super quick/easy. However, they can be costly to keep for longer periods therefore Veeam can convert these snapshots to backups. We require some Veeam AWS worker nodes to do this (compute time basically) but the cost of converting to Veeam Backups is typically more cost effective.

If you’ve done the convert to backups you should see “from backups”.

If I think of anything else I’ll let you know - but hopefully this points you in the right direction.

Best Regards, Ian

Hi @supskyrail - does the answer from Ian above answer you question about your issue and if so please mark it as best answer or if you still need assistance continue the thread but it might be better at that point to contact support.  Let us know either way.

Hi @Ian Wright UKI, strange because I do have Snapshots and Backups enabled. I guess I’ll have to contact support and see if they can help me.

Thank you and I appreciate everyone's time and assistance with this.

Thanks for the update @supskyrail

@supskyrail - No worries. The only thing I can think is ensuring that you have your AWS External Repository viewable in VBR > https://helpcenter.veeam.com/docs/backup/hyperv/external_repository_launching_wizard.html?ver=120

From memory this does appear at times depending on what you have setup but you can add manually as above.

Please let me know if this is shown.

Many thanks,
Ian

Hi @Ian Wright UKI, apologies I’ve only just seen this as I’ve come let everyone know I’ve resolved the issue.

Your statement above is essentially correct. The repositories were added when I attached my Veeam for AWS appliance to VBR. I had to remove them from VBR and manually re-add the repositories in order to be able to scan them for backups. Not sure if this is the normal interaction but was the case for me.

Thanks again everyone for your help.

Excellent - great to hear. I can’t quite recall the reasoning between auto adding and manual but it’s good you have made progress.

Now you can restore between clouds - or another place!

Many thanks,

Ian
