Veeam Recovery Orchestrator 7.2 - Available Now!

ertelle1

It’s Launch Day for Veeam Recovery Orchestrator!

I am so excited for this latest release – which now includes support for Microsoft Hyper-V environments!

There were two major focuses for 7.2:

  1. Support Recovery Plans for Microsoft Hyper-V Backups
  2. Support for Cross-platform recovery plans of vSphere backups to Microsoft Hyper-V environments

Let’s start with #1 supported scenario first.

The Orchestrator server must be connected to SCVMM servers only. Direct connections to Hyper-V hosts are not supported. Currently System Center Virtual Machine Manager (SCVMM) 2022 is supported & CSV storage registered in SCVMM. You can leverage SCVMM tags to help with management. Readiness checks are available to verify that RPO’s are met and recovery location resources are available and ready for use. Orchestrator will also leverage the malware flag detection in Veeam Backup & Replication to verify the restore points being leveraged for recovery are valid and not flagged for suspicion or malicious. After restores of the machines, a post heartbeat check will run to confirm the machines are online with full documentation for recovery process.

Small note here: Hyper-V 2019 and Azure Stack 22H2 have received smoke testing only and although no issues were found it is not recommended to use these versions with Orchestrator in production. Support for additional Hyper-V versions will be added in a future update.

For the #2 supported scenario of cross-platform recovery of vSphere to Hyper-V.

For Recovery of vSphere backups to Microsoft Hyper-V environment – not much differs from the above. All requirements are the same, the biggest difference is now ensuring you create at least one network mapping rule to connect newly created VMs to the proper network. This can be configured when setting up the recovery location, just ensure that vCenter is connected to the Orchestrator server so proper networks can be gathered.

The biggest benefit for adding new support is having the ability to leverage previously created backup policies in Veeam Backup and Replication to utilize as part of the Restore Plans. No need to recreate new backup policies to take advantage of this functionality, essentially the backup policies will be seen when selecting what available groups you’d like to initiate recovery of.

A major milestone was met with this release and there are plans to add more support to other hypervisor platforms this year, plus more features for Microsoft Hyper-V support in Orchestrator. Comment below on what you want to see next for Veeam Recovery Orchestrator!

Awesome to see VRO updated.  In the process of getting it installed now in the homelab for some testing and blogging. 😎

I wish direct connection to Hyper-V hosts or clusters was supported. Being limited to having to use SCVMM is disappointing.
