Ok, the 2nd question for the week is below. This will be a “thinking” question cuz there are several on the actual exam. Good luck!

To be compliant with Veeam's suggested 3-2-1-1-0 Rule, you decide to configure Long-Term Retention by enabling GFS on your Backup Jobs. You're a little concerned with the target storage capacity the GFS restore points will be saved to. You configure Keep Monthly Full Backups For to 3, set the Scheduled Period (week) to Last,  and begin the process on 1 March. When will the first Monthly GFS Flag be removed?

  1. 1 July
  2. 30 June
  3. 2 July
  4. 31 May

Alright, so here’s the answer to this week’s 2nd question. This was a bit tricky. Let me explain this one..

Show content

So, to have long-term retention, we configured GFS. And for this question, we’re only concerned about the monthly’s. This means from the 1st (which is indeed when we start this) until the end of the month, which for the month we start (March), the end is the 31st. Ok, so far so good. Now onto our settings → we configured monthly’s for 3 months. At the end of 3 months, Veeam removes the GFS Flag from the 1st montly. The end of the 1st monthly is 31 March. Veeam will then remove the 1st monthly Flag on 31 June. But wait! There is no 31 June. How does Veeam handle this scenario?? 🤔 When there is no date such as we encounter here, Veeam modifies its formula a bit by simply adding 1 (+1 day) to it. As such, the actual GFS Flag removal date will be 1 July. And thus the answer to this question is a. 1 July .

To read more on GFS Flag removals..see below:
https://helpcenter.veeam.com/docs/backup/vsphere/gfs_flags_removal.html?ver=120

Here’s a bonus question: When will Veeam delete the actual GFS Restore Point file? (I’ll provide answer at end of day today)
