VMCE Practice Question - 17 July 2024 (VTT)

Here’s your VTT VMCE practice question for the week. And, with a nice picture! 😉 Good luck!

A backup administrator must enable guest file system indexing for a backup job of a Linux file server VM.  All required credentials are added to the Veeam Backup & Replication server.  VMware Tools (VIX) cannot be used due to security regulations.  What should be done to make it possible in the following environment?

  1. Use the Windows proxy server as the Guest Interaction Proxy
  2. Connect the Veeam Backup & Replication server to the VM Network
  3. Connect the ESXi host to the VM Network
  4. Use the Veeam Backup & Replication server as the Guest Interaction Proxy

I’m going off my memory here, but I believe the answer is:
B.
This is because you can’t use a Windows proxy server as a GIP for a Linux VM.

I might be wrong, I didn’t double check my answer. :)

I guess it’s A. Use the Windows proxy server as the Guest Interaction Proxy, since it’s the only Veeam component connected to the VM network.

B. is not a best practice, C. i think is not even possible and D. will not be able to communicate to the VM.

  1. Use the Windows proxy server as the Guest Interaction Proxy
  2. The role of a guest interaction proxy can be assigned to a Microsoft Windows server (physical or virtual).

And, the answer to this week’s VTT question is below:

Show content

b. Connect the Veeam Backup & Replication server to the VM Network ; There are a couple key pieces of information for this question → the VM in question is Linux, and VMware Tools (VIX) cannot be used. Because of the 1st item (Linux VM) a regular Windows Veeam managed server (Proxy or otherwise) cannot be used, so “A” is not correct. That leaves 1 of 2 options… “D”, which is normally correct in this circumstance (Linux VM used), or “B”. The ESXi Host has no bearing on this, so “C” is not a valid option for the question. B is the correct answer here because VMware Tools (VIX) cannot be used, which is the 2nd piece of important information for the question. You can read more about why B is correct at the below URL:

Hi Shane @coolsport00, thanks for the answer. But i’m having trouble to understand this one - sorry, maybe you can explain a bit more?

Even after checking Guest Interaction Proxies - User Guide for VMware vSphere (veeam.com) and Requirements under Requirements and Limitations for VMware Backup Proxies - User Guide for VMware vSphere (veeam.com) i’m coming to the conclusion, that the Windows VM (with the proxy role) within the same network (so no VIX must be used) - should be able to process the Linux VM.

thank you and best regards Markus

Hi @Dynamic-

I did have some inaccurate information in my answer response. I'll correct my answer above in a little bit.

@Dynamic - overall, the answer I shared still stands...and most of what I discussed still stands. I did modify a couple areas which were slightly inaccurate though.

Appreciate you engaging in these questions!

IMO the link from @TylerJurgens to the BP article helps to better understand this for me. But I’m very grateful that you @coolsport00 take your time to help me, getting a better oversight.
Also thanks for these kind of questions that you offer to the community, they make a lot of fun and are sometimes very challenging. I appreciate your effort and time. Best regards Markus
