Typically, environment size dictates your deployment model. The size of your environment takes into consideration the number of machines (physical or virtual), as well as the total size of the backed-up data. Another consideration for repository sizing is the period of retention for your backups.

Below you can find a summary of the recommended system requirements. For more detailed specs, visit the User Guide.

  CPU RAM GB disk
Management Server (Linux-Based Backup Server) 8 cores 16 GB +
(500 MB per concurrent job)
Disk 1: 240 GB minimum
Disk 2: 240 GB minimum
Virtual Proxy Server 2 cores +
1 core for each 2 additional concurrent tasks
2 GB +
1 GB for each concurrent task
750 MB
File share / NAS proxy server 2 cores minimum
4 cores recommended +
2 cores are required for each additional concurrent task
4 GB +
4 GB for each concurrent task
300 MB
Repository Server No more than 2 tasks per 1 CPU core 4 GB +
1 GB for each concurrenly processed machine disk

Get started with sizing:

  1. Make sure that servers that you plan to use as backup infrastructure components meet the listed system requirements.
  2. Veeam Sizing Estimator can provide a quick and easy method of estimating the requirements for a Veeam Backup solution.
  3. Veeam Backup Capacity Calculator allows to estimate capacity required to store backup data.

Pro tip: avoid the 10GB database size cap and artificial performance limitations of Microsoft SQL Server Express Edition without breaking the bank with support for free, multi-platform PostgreSQL as a configuration database engine.

Continue by watching this webinar on Veeam Backup & Replication Sizing Best Practices for an overview on how to size Veeam for an entire environment, including Veeam Backup & Replication sizing, when to use which version of SQL, proxy and repository sizing best practices.
