Yet Another Hypervisor question

As service providers we often need to, you know, recovery customer workloads someplace. Most of the VCSPs I know and both that I’ve worked for are either an all VMware shop or mostly VMware with a little bit of Hyper-V. Cloud providers are now somewhat on that list as well.

What does “compute” for disaster recovery look like for you and your organization? Are their solutions out there that you’d like to work with but either Veeam has no support for or, somewhat more specifically, Cloud Connect doesn’t really support from a recoverability standpoint?

The most obvious one for me has been Nutanix AHV. We’ve often ran across customers who want to replicate Nutanix AHV VMs, but Veeam doesn’t support replication for AHV, much less replication into Cloud Connect.

That kind of goes back to the drum I’ve been beating on for a while now. Cross Hypervisor replication. Give me the ability to replicate AHV → VMware, Hyper-V → VMware, KVM → VMware, etc, all through Cloud Connect. Would eliminate us needing to support multiple hypervisors on the back end, and would drive large scale Veeam adoption among those customers that do not run VMware on premises.

I definitely know Proxmox is going to fall under this category for sure based on all the activity recently.  Also Nutanix AHV is another one as well.

Yeah for me I’d love to see an expanded set of recovery destinations, both for Veeam in general but specifically for Veeam Cloud Connect. With VCC you only have the native capability (when managed by service provider is enabled) to restore unencrypted backups to vSphere. While there would be a path here to also get to vCloud Director it wouldn’t be an integrated workflow. I’d also like to see more of those “right click, recover” options from tenant style VBR made available to VCC such as AWS or Azure.

This I completely agree with is more VCC recovery options for sure.  It makes things very difficult for tenants to recover things to other destinations.

I had this discussion just last week at a local veeam meet up. I'd love to see VCC leveraged to enable customers to self service restore backups from on prem to service providers IaaS platforms, VCD and Hyper-v is good enough backends for me for now.

IMO, Nutanix´s AOS native replication capabilities (including cross-hypervisors replication) is a good option! 👍🏻
