Veeam just announced Proxmox support so I wanted to start a thread to discuss thoughts on how this will change the hypervisor landscape.

Announcement is here - https://www.veeam.com/news/veeam-extends-data-freedom-for-customers-with-support-for-proxmox-ve.html

What are your thoughts on this?

Always good to see additional Hypervisor compatibility. However, I am still waiting to see what features will be available for Cloud Connect.

Replication?
Backup to Cloud Connect repositories?

Too early to say, but I’m cautiously optimistic.

Yes I am looking forward to them hopefully announcing some more enhancements to VCC as that is a big part of many MSPs business.  So time will tell.

I was just looking at this.  I’m highly encouraged by this support.  It’s been highly requested in the homelab community for a long time but has really been requested a lot more in the recent months, especially since the Broadcom acquisition completed of VMware and Broadcom has been raising prices on these small clients.  I still love VMware as vSphere is the best baked hypervisor on the market, but these smaller platforms have to be sustaining growth, and support by Veeam really helps to legitimize Proxmox as a viable solution for the SMB market.  This probably isn’t going to be for the large-scale enterprises, but unlike VMware, Veeam hasn’t forgotten about the small businesses out there that wanted/needed an alternate hypervisor that was supported by the backup product of their choice.

Looking at the schedule of events at VeeamON, I’m wondering if this might be the content for the “Secret” session.  Last I checked, I didn’t see anything else about Proxmox, but the presser noted additional information to be released at VeeamON.

I was beginning to wonder the same thing.  😋

Two things I noticed in the presser (for TL:DR):

“Experience the first live hands-on demo of Proxmox VE backup...at the 10th annual VeeamON event”

“General availability for Proxmox VE support is expected in Q3 2024
