Question

How to change the vSphere user in Veeam Enterprise Manager after initial setup

Hello everyone,

I need to change the user account that Veeam Enterprise Manager uses to connect to vSphere. The initial credentials were entered, but the plug-in hasn’t been installed yet, and I don’t see any option to modify the account after the first setup. Can anyone point me in the right direction on how to switch the vSphere user for Enterprise Manager?

Thanks in advance for your help!

You need to remove it and then deploy it again from VEM.  That is the only way to change the credentials.

Hi Chris,

Thanks for the reply! I noticed that the Remove button is also grayed out. Does this mean I need to complete the installation with the currently configured account first (which was only used to check the version), then remove it, and then reinstall with the correct account?

I suspect that the current account doesn’t have the necessary permissions to install the plugin on vSphere, but I believe we can work around this if necessary.

Thanks again for your help!

You should in VEM under the Configuration > vCenter Server section be able to highight the vCenter and remove the plugin or check it.  That is where this is controlled from and should prompt for credentials.

Here is the deployment section for the plugin and the two sections below are to install or uninstall it - Deployment - Veeam Backup Enterprise Manager Guide

Hi Chris,

Thanks for the clarification. In my case, I can only Check the plugin (with the same configured account), but not Remove it. If I proceed with the installation, it will use that same (incorrect) user.

I’m assuming that if this user doesn’t have the necessary permissions to install the extension on vSphere, the process will prompt for different credentials so I can specify the correct account. Otherwise, I’ll have to request the necessary permissions for the current user, install the plugin, remove it, and then reinstall with the definitive user.

Thanks again for your help!

You can do two things one is grant the permissions as you stated to get this working. If it is no trouble the other option would be to run the DB connection tool and specify a new database for VEM to point to. Then you start fresh, add the VBR server and can then install the plugin with the proper account.  Up to you which option you take but the second I have used many times without issue and it is quick.  Best of luck.
