Components of Veeam Backup for Microsoft 365
Sever:
This component manages and coordinates backup and restore operations and provides a console for managing backup infrastructure. Comprised of the following three parts:
Proxy/Proxy Pools: This manages the data transfer between the Microsoft 365 environment and the backup repository. The proxy retrieves data from the Microsoft 365 environment and sends it to the backup repository. It also performs various data processing tasks, such as compression and encryption.
JET-Based Backup Repository: Veeam Backup for Microsoft 365 uses JET-based backup repositories only to store backups created by backup jobs. To save data in storage systems of this type, Veeam Backup for Microsoft 365 uses Extensible Storage Engine (ESE) databases, also known as JET Blue.
Object storage Repository: This is a type of storage that allows you to store and retrieve large amounts of unstructured data. Object storage is more future proof. Today it already supports encryption and compression of objects, thus being more secure and space efficient than local Jet databases. Object Storage scales much better than local Jet databases on the file system and as such avoids performance issues. Object storage can be a backup repository in Veeam Backup for Microsoft 365 where immutability can be enabled for both backups and backup copies. This provides a cost-effective and scalable option for long-term data retention. Veeam supports many object storage platforms, such as Amazon S3, Microsoft Azure Blob Storage, IBM Cloud Object Storage and S3 compatible object storage.
Console:
In Veeam Backup for Microsoft 365, the console is the graphical user interface for managing and configuring backup and restore tasks for Microsoft 365 data. It provides a central location to view and manage backup jobs, repositories, proxies, and other backup infrastructure components.
Users can use the console to configure backup jobs, monitor backup status, perform restores, and manage other aspects of their Microsoft 365 backup environment. The console is accessed through a client and installed on any computer with network connectivity to the backup server.
Explorers:
Explorers are tools that allow you to perform granular restores of specific data types. The available explorers include Exchange Online, SharePoint Online, OneDrive for Business, and Teams, each providing a user-friendly interface for locating and recovering specific items or data sets.
There are also additional components to Veeam Backup for Microsoft 365, such as:
Rest API:
The Veeam Backup for Microsoft 365 RESTful API is a powerful tool that allows developers and administrators to access and manage backup and restore operations programmatically. The API provides a range of functions, including job management, backup and restore operations, and item-level restores.
It can be integrated with third-party systems or used to create custom workflows that automate backup and restore operations tasks.
Audit API can track and audit access to restore processes.
The /Organizations/{organizationId}/AuditItems resource collection allows you to manage audit items. Veeam Backup for Microsoft 365 tracks access to backed-up data of a specific user or group and sends audit email notifications for each operation performed with the backed-up data of a specific user or group.
Restore Portal:
The Veeam Backup for Microsoft 365 Restore Portal is a web-based interface that allows users to browse and restore their data from backups created by the solution. It provides a simple and intuitive interface that enables users to quickly locate and restore items, such as emails, attachments, contacts, and OneDrive for Business files, without the need for assistance from IT staff.
The restore portal can be accessed from any device with an internet connection, making it ideal for remote and mobile workers.
