Sorry folks I could not resist with the corporate manifest jargon to use as a title. Yesterday I attended the CNCF Kubernetes Canada East Meetup. The meeting was hosted by PWC in their brand new skyscraper in Downtown Toronto. You could tell that this was going to be an Uber nerd meetup because no one could figure out how to use the super hi tech elevators. It turns out that there is a panel and it changes and the floor button was the only one that was unlocked but the icon was not that big and all of us Uber nerds need new glasses.

However being troubleshooters by nature we all started trying to unlock other floors. Soon the boisterous crowd of Kubernetes delinquents were put right by a 7 foot 10 Security officer in a bullet proof vest (they obviously knew we were coming and came prepared).

I had been to 3 virtual Canada CNCF meetups but nothing prepares you for a real life horde of Kubernetes and Linux fanatics outside of a Zoom meeting square box. Upon entering the ultra modern room everyone noticed the sticker table and a mad rush ensued. It got quite ugly as the “cool” stickers started to run out and waves of passive aggressiveness followed. Then there was the “wait for someone to go first and grab pizza contest”. Finally feeling that as one of the more senior (age wise) members of this bunch I bit the bullet and grabbed a few slices and a drink. Immediately after that I felt a burst of activity behind me as the Kubernetes addicts surged towards the Pizza boxes. The meeting then started and it was well worth it. The leader is a google employee from Montreal and he came bearing all the latest news. Then PWC had a very interesting talk on Cilium.

Overall a great evening and to highlight a great finale I found a sticker which I will proudly display in the future to all of my managers and bosses who start a conversation with questions like “what is the strategic vision of your future career path and how do you intend to boost productivity to become a corporate achiever and “winner”?

Answer:

PS I see that I made a typo in the title spelling but am not allowed to edit that, in fact though that fits the leit-motif of this article, Krazy Kubernetes!! ;)
