Cloud Native Weekly - All things Cloudy - 29-07-2023

Hey Everyone, been a while since I put something together like this.

I think the last post like this I put out was just after VeeamON, VeeamON was busy and the other events that I was at surrounding it were hard work, I have been concentrating on resting up and resetting and now we are back and in fact, I have been back a few weeks creating that content and getting stuff done (GSD) again.

If you are active around Kubernetes Korner you will have seen over the past few days that I am trying to be a little more active and communicating with you all on the excellent topics you are bringing up here.

Remember this forum is not just about Kasten K10, we can talk about all things Kubernetes, Cloud-Native, Cloud (don’t let that other cloud group know), Open Source and DevOps.

There is a lot of overlap between some of the topics we are covering and that is fine and healthy, see something cool then be sure to share it here for others to see.

As I am blurting stuff out I was really going to use this post to give you an update on some projects.

I have 3-4 community projects that I am currently working on and want to give an update on them.

#90DaysOfDevOps

The first one is 90DaysOfDevOps and the Open Source | Learning In Public resource and repository that I started in 2022

GitHub Repository - https://github.com/MichaelCade/90DaysOfDevOps

We also have a website - https://www.90daysofdevops.com/

As many will know 2023 was more focused on the topic of DevSecOps and also about getting Subject Matter Experts in that could talk about specific security topics and document them, the back end of the project was touching on some of those areas that we did not get to cover in 2022 such as Python, AWS, OpenShift etc. The latter being covered by @saintdle (Dean Lewis) who has been my partner in crime throughout this continuous learning journey. Sidenote: It is about time he came in here to share some of his work in his new role…

We are almost done with the 2023 edition, for anyone that is following along you will have maybe seen that day 40 and 41 are very empty right now! This is what I have to find some time now and get some hands-on scenarios for people to get to grips with HashiCorp Vault in the secrets management section. I managed to get day 39 “Getting hands-on with HashiCorp Vault” done over the last few weeks.

The growth of this resource has been amazing and I have been thinking about 2024 and how we can get even more of the community involved…. more on that in a month or two..

Stat wise I am blown away… 23,286 GitHub Stars 😵5,649 forks 🍴and 98 contributors 👯

So yeah, watch this space, catch up on the repository and all the new stuff and provide some feedback. Equally ask questions…

#UpTheStack

A new project I started a few weeks ago is called #UpTheStack

https://www.upthestack.io/

The goal of this project is to look at the 55 graduated and incubating projects that are currently in the CNCF landscape for those that have seen this landscape you will know that there are 1000s of projects but these ones I have chosen are the more mature ones, there are spread across different layers and then categories within each layer.

This blog post goes into more detail about the project - https://www.upthestack.io/cloud-native/2023/07/04/Welcome.html

We have 2 episodes.

Episode 1 - https://youtu.be/dDObCbYeuF4

The first episode is an intro into the project and the CNCF landscape.

Episode 2 - https://youtu.be/d_brRJhUHEw

The second episode focuses on 2 projects that land in the provisioning section under the automation and configuration category, In particular Cloud Custodian is a very interesting project worth taking a look at, it is not just about containers and Kubernetes, it can be used to enforce guardrails into you cloud based workloads. Very interesting.

The next episode will be taking a look into these two projects in the CNCF landscape.

Harbor - Container Image Registry (VMware Originated Open Source Project)

Dragonfly - File Distribution System

These episodes will consist of some theory and demo and the aim is to keep them to 2 projects per video and keep them under the 30 minute mark.

Until next time….
