Good day team,

I created a test job of an oracle linux server(database server), job appeared in the job listing, ran 2 job tests, both failed with errors:

I had the wrong credentials first, so i thought that was the problem, I now found the correct credentials, managed to successfuly connect to my oracle linux server using correct credentials using a non standard ssh port.

I was adding the server under backup infrastructure->mananged servers, entered correct ssh creds, reached the review page to install the Installer and Transport service( so clearly the linux login creds are correct).

Concerns:

  1. My boss said to HALT on installing these 2 required services on this DB server as he does not want any services impact or catastrophe lol, he is new to veeam. For me lol, i am very cautious as well, i dont want to any overtime because of any unforseen issues
  2. Would the absence of these 2 services have caused the errors above, will backups work if these are installed?
  3. Is it safe to install (though required for backups) these 2 services on an Oracle Linux Server running a high profile Banking oracle database managing the backend for an entire organization and its branches?

Regards,

Yes not having those services which Veeam uses to talk to the Agent to conduct the backups would cause these types of issues.  You need to install those services and they are safe.  They will not cause problems and are only used during backup that is all.

@SysEng - Yes, both the Transport and Installer service are required.. They’re really small/lightweight. You also need to make sure other Linux tools are on the system (generally part of the Linux kernel already...rarely you’d have to install these individually), as noted in the Guide (see Software):

Fully agreed, its my boss who really stopped me lol. What can i show him, any articles, proof to him that its ok, he is very paranoid. It is the only server now out of the scheduled backups. Veeam is working PERFECTLY. Give me anything to show him these are needed and safe. I mean these services are installed on all backed up servers lol.

Maybe share this?

I ran a CAT command, see OS details and tell me if Veeam 12.1 installing installer and transport service will cause any issues:

As long as the OS is a supported version based on the documentation then there is nothing to worry about.

Umm...I can’t tell you one way or the other that running those services will or will not “hurt” your computer. I can only share what Veeam states (and we aren’t Veeam support 😊). Veeam Agent for Linux is supported for Oracle Linux and for the versions specified in the Sys Req link I shared. I’ve installed the Agent on an Ubuntu server and it was fine. Now, I didn’t have a prod DB on it, but that’s the whole point of having Veeam...so you can back up applications like a DB, or AD, or SQL, or Exchange, etc. Those services should be fine.

I have running the agent on several productive database server  - Oracle and SAP server on Suse Linux and RHEL.

No problems with the server and the databases.

Likewise with the Veeam Enterprise Plugins.
