I am attempting to upgrade Veeam backup and replication but I get an installation failure.

Error    Failed to start service 'Veeam Backup Service' after installing package VeeamBackupSvc.msi
Error    MSI package: VeeamBackupSvc.msi returned error code: 1603

What could be causing the service start failure and m.si error code 1603?

You will need to go through the logs but is the database service running?  Postgres or SQL?

This needs to be running before Veeam will start.  If the logs don't help I would suggest a support ticket as that is the best route with these types of issues.

Hi Chris

Thanks for your reply. All services automatically stops during the upgrade. Could the install failure be related to outdated .net?

Hi Chris

That is possible but the installer checks the pre-reqs and would update it since it is included in the ISO file.  You could try manually updating and then upgrading again.

Worst case scenario is uninstall the application and then reinstall it pointing it back to your DB in the process so it uses it again.  That has worked for me when I get stuck.  😂

Hi @EmmanuelRS -

I found a few posts about a “1603 error”. Maybe 1 can help:

This Forums post suggests something related to the DB: https://forums.veeam.com/veeam-backup-replication-f2/error-1603-installing-veeam-backup-replication-server-t87207.html

  > This would lead me to just doing as Chris suggested (simplest way)...and that is to completetly uninstall Veeam and reinstall it using your config DB file to restore your Veeam backup environment

I also see “error 1603” looks to be a Windows-based error, and found a couple other posts about it below:

  > This MS post has several reasons..not sure if any apply here: https://learn.microsoft.com/en-us/troubleshoot/windows-server/application-management/msi-installation-error-1603

  > Here’s another:

Just a few things to try. But, it may be quicker/easier to just do a reinstall if you can.

Best.

Hi, please to restart service. Will work? If not check user account under , which is running. Another help. You can try to open certmgr.msc and delete VBR certificates. Reboot and start to upgrade again.

Found the issues.

  1. .net framework was outdated and had to update to the latest version causing error 1603.
  1. Veeam setup has issues starting some Veaam services.

The main issue was that the update would not run if any Veeam services were running. I had to stop each one individually and set them all to manual startup. The Veeam setup would fail to automatically start these servers so i had to start them myself.

The upgrade ran fine thereafter and I re-enabled the services to start automatically.

Glad to hear you got it sorted @EmmanuelRS . Thank you for posting your solution.

I recently upgraded this simple go-to task manager. Click on processes, and there are tasks. Simply click on the end task one by one.
