I’ll try this as well. I’ll list some hardware, requirements, and see what you guys come up with.

Requirements

Multiple site for DR

Predictable pricing. (Can’t have azure tell us we have a $40k bill one month for unpredicted restores)

Quick restores

Environment

2 Datacenters, 10 Gb link between, soon to be a second.

1Gb up from Main site, soon to be 5Gb/10Gb

1Gb up from DR site, won’t be upgraded in the next while.

Virtual environment

Multisite VMware environment

SRM with storage replication (not unwilling to switch to Veeam for some)

20+ hosts

Veeam Infrastructure

Enterprise license

2 SANS - block fiber storage

2 LTO8 Tape libraries (1 per site)

2 proxies that are also acting as repos to the SAN’s and Tape proxies. (256GB Memory, 40 Core)

2 proxies that will be added in about 6 months to 1 year (same as above)

Veeam Enterprise Manager

Challenge

Storage is about to be replaced.  Choose your own Storage options for a mix of performance vs capacity A single backup of online production data is 600TB

Data needs to be archived to cloud or tape with the ability to restore individual files. The ability to keep it in an organized file structure ongoing has to be possible.  estimated 1PB of archive data needs to go somewhere with minimal access, but also unpredictable usage.

Storage needs to be immutable at least 1 copy. Hybrid/flash for a second option for performance based tasks (backup verification, Veeam labs)

Production storage is all flash arrays with backup from storage snapshot. all fiber is 32GB

Hello @Scott , interesting exercise. Could you tell me whats is the current configuration of LTO8 libraries? How many drives? How many tape?

What is the RTO/RTO for the customer? All backup data shoud have same SLAs?

For the proposal, do you take considerations of customers preferences and kwnowledge etc? Linux etc..

2 IBM TS4500’s, 8 drives in each.  Appx 350 tapes in each.  So 4.2 PB uncompressed,  (Tapes are cheap to buy too if more needed, TS4500 can hold 730 before expanding or ejecting)

RTO/RPO isn’t given, but ASAP for critical applications, DC’s, DFS, and other servers are at both locations.   A few hours for most is fine, site is 24 hours so “nightly” backups isn’t really a thing, they run all day.

Minimal Linux preferred, but for a LHR it might be a good idea.

Cloud is an option as well for immutability. but something like Wasabi with predictable pricing.

Can we have the retention policy for tier 1 and tier 2?

Should we have two copies on tapes in case of loss?
