Question

Unable to choose mount server. Error Linux mount server requires a RHEL or Rocky operating system despite using VSA

I am a first time Veeam customer trying to set up a new test environment using a trial license in hopes to purchase it but unfortunately have had a lot of trouble setting things up and restores have been a nightmare.

I have one physical HPE server that is running the Veeam VSA installed from the latest ISO file.  I am able to run a backup of unstructured data but am unable to restore.  When I try I get no mount server is available.  I have a second physical HPE server that is running Windows Server 2022.  I also have a laptop that I’m using just for management with the console installed.

The issue is when I go to Backup infrastructure and click on Managed Servers/Microsoft Windows, I see the windows server, we’ll call it backup1.testdomain.com and next to it says “Microsoft Windows server (default Windows mount server).”  When I go to Backup repositories, I see Default Backup Repository and the linux VSA box, we’ll call it VSA1 (not joined to a domain).  If I go to the properties of VSA1 and click next until I get to the Mount Servers screen, the Windows mount server is not specified and the Linux mount server is VSA1 (Backup server).  If I try to change the Windows mount server to backup1.testdomain.com and click next I get an error that says “Linux mount server requires a RHEL or Rocky operating system.”  Despite it already being selected, I have no way to get past that.  I also don’t know why the Windows Server is not specified when in managed servers it shows it’s the default.

If I try to do a restore using Restore/File share, restore individual files and folders, it shows no mount server.  If I try to do a restore using Restore/Agent it loads the backup browser and I’m able to do a restore.

I have a lot of other issues and I’m not sure if they are related to having no internet access.  I will open up separate posts for those issues.

I don’t know what to do.  Any assistance would be appreciated.  Thank you in advance.

What is your repository setup?  Is it just the default backup repository on the VSA?  Did you check the properties of the repository where the NAS backups are going to for the Mount Server configuration?

You need to specify the mount server in the repository settings.  A bigger picture of your setup would be good, or just a rough sketch.  But check the NAS Repository where you are sending the backups and see if there is a Linux mount server there.

Hi, yes, it is a very basic setup.  There is just the one default backup repository which is the VSA.  I have no other repository.  I did check the properties and that is where I get the error described despite the default backup repository being listed.

Unsure then how to address this, as best practices use a different repository other than the default one created by deploying the VSA or VBR in general.

I am not sure since this is just a trial whether you feel like creating a support ticket but might be the only option if you are unable to create a standalone repository.

To make things more odd, if I use the full windows Backup and Replication console, the VSA is listed under Linux mount server but if I use the limited web browser pointing at the VSA and check the properties of the VSA backup repository, the linux mount server shows no options found. They both provide the same error that Linux mount server requires a RHEL or Rocky operating system.

It was my understanding that the VSA runs Rocky linux and could be used as the Linux mount server.  Is that correct or do I need yet another box just for that even though I have no Linux servers in our environment?

No, you can use it for sure the way it is.  Maybe using the Console not the WebUI is the way to set it now that I think of it.  I know the Web UI is not fully ported from the thick client just yet, but it will get better in 13.1 and beyond.  Try setting the mount server from the Console thick client and see.

No luck in the thick client.  To add yet another twist, under Backup infrastructure/Managed servers/Linux, I see the VSA listed and it says default Linux mount server next to it.

Thanks for your help anyway.  I am having another issue which I’ll start a new discussion on.

No problem.  If that is the case, then doing a restore from a NAS backup should work in theory.  If you do find the answer, just post back here.

Hi Chris, I actually did semi find the answer.  I went in to backup infrastructure/managed servers/linux and went to the properties of the VSA.  It said everything was already installed but I continued anyway.  It ran through it’s little check and now it seems I can do a restore.  I still have an issue though when I got to backup infrastructure/backup repositories and check the properties I cannot choose the default mount servers.  This time I am getting a different error that the specified cache folder is invalid.  I imagine it is not valid since under configure settings it is set to a windows path for the linux server but the browse button next to it is greyed out so not sure what to put there.  Either way things are looking better.

Great.  Glad to hear that.

Update.

I was beyond frustrated with this problem and decided to start a new lab.  I built a brand new VSA on physical hardware.  I also have a second windows box in the lab.  I did nothing on the VSA except add the windows server as a managed server and set it as the default windows mount server.  There are no backup jobs or anything else in inventory.  I went in to edit the VSA backup repository and clicking next until the Mount Servers section returns the same error “Linux mount server requires a RHEL or Rocky operating system.”

You can also reproduce the error another way by trying to add a new backup repository.  I planned to add a windows backup repository just for configuration backups since I don't know how to export them off the VSA.  I cannot get this working either.

I am wondering did I discover a bug which is hard to believe given the basic task I’m trying to complete and the fact the appliance has been out for a little while now or am I doing something wrong?  If it’s a bug I have no way to report it since I’m in a trial and also can’t proceed with my purchase.  Is anyone able to test what I’m trying to do?  Does anyone have any suggestions?

Thank you.

I am now thinking my issue has to do with it being a lab environment with no internet connectivity?  I found another forum post with similar topic: https://forums.veeam.com/viewtopic.php?f=2&t=102347&start=0

where the solution was to run: sudo dnf install which.

I tried but of course it fails since it cannot download any updates.

I connected it to the Internet and updated the little there was to update but still have the same issue unfortunately.

An easier way to duplicate this is to just go to edit repository and click the finish button.

You could create a mirror server and point the VSA to that which does have internet access.  See this post on the community -

Thanks Chris.  I actually connected it to the internet since it was brand new and not domain joined.  I updated everything which was just one file.  I am still having the same issue.  Do you have a VSA to check if you have the same problem?

I have a VSA in my lab, so remind me what to check again?

Backup Infrastructure/Backup Repositories, check the properties of the VSA.  Click next until the Mount servers screen and see if you can get past that.

Alternately, try to add a new Backup repository (I was trying with the direct attached Windows Server option) and see if you can get past the Mount servers selection and actually get the new repository added.

Thank you.

Hi Chris, just curious to see if you had a chance to check?  Thank you.

Hi Chris, just curious to see if you had a chance to check?  Thank you.

@jerrypanski -- I tested with a Win2025 ReFS repo that I have in my repository list and was able to click all the way through without issue.  I can even add a second repo from that server (just different folder) and it works fine.

Thank you for checking!  Not sure what’s wrong with my setup.

Not a problem.  Unsure myself to be honest but if still problems I would suggest a support ticket to try and see if you can resolve it.
