Synology as managed Server

Dear Veeam community,

I am using Veeam Backup & Replication to back up my data and would like to know if it is possible to add Synology NAS to the list of managed servers in Veeam Backup & Replication. I tried to configure Synology NAS as a Linux server, but I encountered an error: ‘Unable to collect hardware info. scp: /var/services/homes/adminDS/.: No such file or directory’. I have checked the path and permissions but the problem persists. Can you give me instructions or recommendations on how to properly configure the Synology NAS as a managed server in Veeam Backup & Replication? I would appreciate any help or advice. Thank you in advance for your assistance.

Synology NAS cannot be added as a Managed Server in Veeam Backup & Replication because it runs a Linux-based OS that doesn't support direct agent-based management in Veeam.

You can use it as a repo (iSCSI) or a NFS/SMB target.

You can use it as a repo (iSCSI) or a NFS/SMB target. 

Veeam has the ability to configure a Linux server as a manage server.

Backup Infrastructure -> Managed Servers -> Add Server -> Linux (with SSH Connection)

A Synology NAS is no server. I can imagine (but do not know for sure) that you can integrate a VM that runs on the NAS as a managed server.

But not the NAS itself. Like ​@eblack already mentioned - you can use it a repository via iSCSI or SMB/NFS.

  • Oracle Linux 7 (UEK3) to 9 (UEK R7)
  • Oracle Linux 7 to 9 (RHCK)
  • RHEL 7.0 to 9.5
  • Rocky Linux 9.0 to 9.5
  • SLES 12 SP4 or later, 15 SP1 or later
  • Ubuntu: 18.04 LTS, 20.04 LTS, 22.04 LTS, 24.04 LTS

Synology is “technically” a server but as mentioned you cannot add it to Veeam as a Managed Server.  I have two of them and cannot do this as I use them with VMware and for my backup targets only.
