Hey Folks,

maybe some of you are running with Synology NAS Systems. In the last couple of months there was a big discontent with their customers → they made the decission to not support any 3rd Party vendors for Disk Drives anymore.

FYI:

This will be changed again, back to normal in a hopeful near future!

As you can see here, in Synologys official German channel on YouTube, they announced their Solution Day 2025. In the comments a customer is asking when the mentioned support for 3rd Party HDDs will be back again… And they answered as follows:

Hello RogerStocker,
Thank you for your candid comment! We know that many users would like to see more flexibility when it comes to HDDs. We are currently in talks with manufacturers to ensure that third-party hard drives will be officially supported again in the future. However, this is a process that cannot be completed overnight.
We will keep you updated on this – thank you for your patience! 💡

Best, Markus

Finally - Justice!! 😊

Nice that it goes back to normal again.

Nice to see them revert this as it was a pain getting just Synology drives.   Looking forward to this as I have three of them.  😂

I’m running four Synology HDDs in my DS923+. When I got the system, there weren’t any drive restrictions yet (those came later with newer models). Normally, I’m a fan of WD Red drives, but since I didn’t pay for these, I decided to give the Synology ones a shot.

My impression: they’re louder, a bit more expensive, and the only real benefit is that you can update the firmware directly within DSM. For private/home use, I’d say they’re overrated compared to the price/performance/noise balance you get with alternatives like WDs.

Side note: with this neat script 007revad/Synology_HDD_db, you can even add third-party NVMes and use them as a second volume (perfect for containers or VMs). Definitely worth checking out if you like to get the most out of your NAS 😀

Yeah my DS920+ and DS923+ have other drives but the new DS925+ came with Synology drives.  Might change them out later.  Will definitely check the script out. 👍

Home lab’ers win again! 🙌🏻😉

Thanks for sharing Markus.
