Hi, has anyone configured the Oracle plugin/RMAN file, so that one copy is made locally and then it is sent to the Veeam repository using the plugin? Is this possible or if I want to have a copy in two locations (local and Veeam) do I have to use, for example, the Linux Agent and copy the folder with the copy made by RMAN?

Hi @zawro -

I’m not really too aware of a way to get a copy local & in a Veeam Repo. You would maybe have to get a backup within Oracle RMAN itself using the Oracle tool, then use the Veeam Plugin to place a copy in a Veeam Repo.

What you could also do is just use the Veeam Plugin and place the backup on a Scale-Out Backup Repo to place a copy on some “local” (performance) tier, then add another location as Capacity Tier and use the SOBR Copy function to have a Oracle backup copy elsewhere.
See: https://helpcenter.veeam.com/docs/backup/plugins/repos_rman.html?ver=120

Also, there was a well article blogged about on RMAN a few mos ago worth reading:

Hope that helps.

Best.

I don’t use the Oracle RMAN plugin but it looks like you may need to use the Linux Agent on the box and then do a second backup this way as you noted.  Maybe try searching the forums to see if anyone else asked this question - https://forums.veeam.com

Hopefully you get your answer or the Linux Agent does the trick.

Hi, Veeam RMAN Plugin uses SBT_TAPE, and you cannot do a backup to disk and tape simultaneously with RMAN.

Does it need to be local to the machine or you just want multiple copies? I can think of a few answers:

  1. scripted job that does a local dump of the DBs, use RMAN Plugin with Veeam to have the Veeam controlled backup
  2. You can duplex the Veeam controlled RMAN backups to multiple repositories: https://helpcenter.veeam.com/docs/backup/plugins/configuring_rman_plugin_lin.html?ver=120 (step 6) - while this won’t be a local copy and will be stored in Veeam proprietary format, it will produce multiple copies
  3. Same as 1, but include a machine level backup so that the dumps are also protected there as well as the machine for fast restores. (i.e., dump the DBs with some script locally, Veeam RMAN plugin for the main protection, and also an image level backup from Veeam to protect the whole machine, which will include the dumped DBs)

I realize this doesn’t quite meet your request, but I think it’s the best way to handle it at the moment.

I only have one main repository in Veeam, so a local disk on the Oracle server would allow me to keep another copy and quickly restore from Oracle in case of problems.I will probably have to test the "backup backupset" command to copy from DISK to SBT. Has anyone tested such a solution?
