I was chatting with a few friends just now and I was reminded of the old internet. You know, the fun internet where things like Facebook and Instagram didn’t exist. Fark was active. Slashdot was where you got all your technical news from, BBSs were still active and you looked forward to the next Strongbad email.

My favorite fun internet was ASCII Star Wars.

Anyone else have any gems from the old days you can remember and share? Many of the younger generation may not remember, but I do, and I miss it.

I still refer back to the homestar runner videos far too often, especially the “techno” episode of strongbad emails.

I love that I trigger this for you every time I close too many tabs when we record.

Also, I’ll just leave this here...

Winamp for music FTW! I was a ‘late bloomer’ to tekkie-ness as I was in the Air Force for about 8yrs. I didn’t start till 1999-2000’ish.

Did you see where they made Winamp open source this week?

I did hear that news, although I haven’t actually checked it out. While cool, I generally use other services for my music these days (PlexAMP is amazing). Though this talk of the old school media players reminds me of the old Windows Media player visualizations. Never used media player much, but the visualizations were awesome.

I remember having to remove the 5.25” floppies (one boot disk, one program disk) from my backpack before going through the metal detectors at the school library so my disks wouldn’t be corrupted.

Lost a lot of coding hours in Basic forgetting they were in there.

PONG. I liked PONG.

Also liked when Microsoft still had the net send command. Had a lot of fun with that.

Also forgot to mention hanging around the high school’s administration office at lunch time playing Oregon Trail on the teletype machine connected via T-1 to ah HP 5000 somewhere. Have no idea how many boxes of tractor fed printer paper we burned through.

Sorta cool considering I’m from Oregon and all. :-)

Newgrounds. Not always PG and often NSFL, but that site was a trove of crazy things.
